I was suffering from random shutdowns, and I think I found the reason.
My processor, a Pentium 4 running at 1.6GHz, had a temperature of 73°C! It goes down when it isn’t under a heavy load. Therefore, I’m very sorry to say that UD will no longer run on my computer until I can get in there and see what the problem is.

My #1 guess is the ball bearings on the fan are shot, it's probably not going fast enough.Tak wrote: I was suffering from random shutdowns, and I think I found the reason.

#2 is that the thermal paste is not properly put on so you should try reapplying some new one.
Do you get to see your fan speed? for a typical cpu fan you should be getting at least 4000rpm or so but that differs from fan to fan. I'm basing this on my stock AMD fan which is like a 60mm.

Yeah I'm suprised too. You'd think it would attract people from search engines looking for sites to spam up.Pyr-O-Rgasm wrote: I've always wondered why such a 1337 topic like this would be not used lately. I MEAN C'MON! IT'S T3H FOOK1NG SP4M LYK OMG!

Yes, I’ve been thinking about fan speed. My fans almost hit 2,900RPM. That doesn’t seem very fast. However, I’m pretty sure my fans have never went faster, and they did a good job at keeping my computer from frying during the hot summer.Red Squirrel wrote:My #1 guess is the ball bearings on the fan are shot, it's probably not going fast enough.Tak wrote: I was suffering from random shutdowns, and I think I found the reason.

I am so scared that the problem is thermal paste. That’s a little too close to the processor for my liking. I’ll destroy the processor. I know I will. I’m not really a hardware person. I enjoying the software side of computing, but the hardware side makes me nervous. I guess I just need more practice.

Yeah you're best bet is to take off the heat sink and reapply the paste. I had my PC go to 70 once but it was during a heat wave in the summer, but it should not happen in winter!

When I have alot of money to waste, I'm going to get the best AMD I can find, and alot of crap to overload the computer. I'll buy everything I need EXCEPT a cooling fan.
Turn it on and see how long it takes before it fries.

Less than 2 minutes.
Tak, I would check the fans first. Like you, I would be reluctant to try replacing thermal paste, unless you are sure of what you're doing.
Pentium 4 is designed to power down when overheated. Sure hope it works since my mother board has no heat sensor chip.

Man I so need to rig up a tower and pringles cans. I can probably get at leat 20mbps worth of internet access from all the unsecured wireless routers in town. All default settings too.

You can probably look it up on google, but the idea was that somebody figured out how to make a directional antenna pretty cheaply using a pringles can and some parts from radio shack. This antenna could then be connected to a laptop computer and used for war driving, that is driving past houses and businesses trying to gain access to unsecured wireless networks.
I seriously doubt the pringles can's viability on a large scale though

Ya, that was the best. You have no idea how many people have unlocked wireless. I'd say at least 90% of the wireless signals found were set to the default settings. Go figure. Now you know why so many people complain that their Internet is slower .

haha yeah since people like me capture all these signals and multiplex them into a connection so fast, that it actually beats sympatico's adversised speed. (note the difference between "advertised" and "actual" )
