heh, after a few day's I'mfinally discovering some of those new features in Norton Antivirus... and they all suck! Maybe I should go back to 2k2. My system has been slower than crap since I installed norton, and I just realized it was because I didn't disable the dozen defualt services that I have no use for that it installs and run automatically. One actually scans all archivesas they come into your system. I figured, that's kinda neat, that way I don't have to scan torrents and stuff after the fact. But it's scans for these files so broadly, it even tries to scan zips I've created as soon as I create them. kinda annoying.

I'm beginning to think norton is a bit overkill anyway. Anyone know of a good lightweight virus scanner with frequent definition updates?

I use PCcillen 2000, suprisingly it does not have any kind of update limit, I can still connect to the server and update. It's very good. Just disable the pop3 scan because it screws around with your outlook settings and after a while the accounts just "die" and you have to change it back.

I've heard some good things about NOD32. I wouldn't know personally though.

Just for fun I installed phpbb on my server. While it looks like quite a good forum software, Invision board is still much better in terms of options and such. it's also easier to mod. I looked at the phpbb code and it did not even look like php, it was all these weird functions I never heard of. :D

I ran AVG for a while, pretty good for a free scanner. NOD32 doesn't look that bad either. PCCillen, well I just took a quick look at the product information, and it looks just as bloated as norton.

I'll download and try some stuff out tommorrow I guess. Kinda liked the norton defragger and win doctor though. But can't get those without also installing huge chunks of the beast... heh, might be looking for a new defragger next :P

Thanks for the help everyone.

Yeah programs get worse, I'm sure the newer pc cillen is probbaly more bloated. The 2000 version is plain and simple and that's why I like it. There's stuff I don't use in it but in general it's a good A/V.

Thanks Wren, something else to look into :) Right now I'm kinda leaning toward AVG, just because it's free and would be a lot simpler to deal with. but we'll see what happens.

It seems to be a trend in the industry to bloat things up with unnecessary features and bundle things together with programs you don't want i order to justifly jacking up the price of a product. It's getting harder to get an anti-virus program without getting an entire "Internet Security Suite" half of the features of which are redundant if you use mozilla :P

haha yeah so true. Like popup killers and stuff. Who needs one of those when you can just use mozilla, and it also blocks that activeX crap which can install junk in your computer without your knowledge or request. Hmm, I sound like a security advisor or something.

I personally use some AV program called EZArmor, mostly because it's one of the few programs out there that worked on Server 2003 without giving me trouble :pissed off:
But like Red said, no need to sweat this virus stuff too bad, as long as you are using a good browser :P

Yep, I've ran without an A/V or spyware removal tools and never really had problems. All the viruses that I did get infected with were when I did have an A/V and it was just one of those odd ones that are not caught on time. Just for fun I installed adaware on my computer for the first time since this installation of windows, and there was like 16 items, all minor things like cookies and a few registry entries (related to alexa toolbar which I purposely installed for experimentation)

haha yeah he is getting smarter. I think I need to bring his database on my LAN server and have conversations to make him smarter. I should setup a script that makes another bot talk to it and have that one talk back etc... see which one get's smarter first.

I run that Spyware blaster program once in a while just to give myself another layer of security, but I'm not too worried.
I only use my virus scanner to scan P2P files

yeah same here. Most of the security I do have is for assurance more then anything. When I get a file from an untrusted source I'll scan it with my A/V (make sure it's updated first) and if I'm suspicious I'll use the online scan. usually I can tell a virus from a normal file without an A/V. If the file is very small, like 20KB, and does not have an icon, it's 95% chance a virus. Mind you, some viruses do have icons, and I've seen some 600MB viruses (they just add junk data at the end)

:) I'm running AVg now. I notice a significant performance boost in my compy :P Ditched norton altogether. All I really want a virus scanner for anyway is on demand scanning. I just want to scan the stuff that I download. And I'm not stupid enough to propagate email viruses, hell, I don't even run Outlook or OE, I run thunderbird for my email needs :D Still I like to have an antivirus around. Viruses aren't much of a problem outside Outlook and kazaa, but that's really no excuse to be lazy either. But doing a full cavity search on every file that comes within a 20mi radius of my computer... that's a bit much

I just pulled out a copy of tetris worlds I umm acquired a while back to try it out. And while it's pretty much the same classic tetris gameplay with a few nifty twists here and there, I have one question for the creators of this game. Why bother putting a 3d engine into a game whose entire purpose is to animate a 3d background that you're not even looking at?

Ok, sure 300mb is somewhat of a small installed size for games nowadays, but when the same game could be created with all the same features, and fit on a bloody floppy disk, it makes you wonder if they were thinking about gameplay or some half-assed whizz-bang factor.

*cough* ok, now that I got that out of my system, otherwise it's an ok game.

hmm you have a point there. Reminds me of this pacman game I saw at electronic boutique. The system requirements were like super high, you needed a 32MB video card or higher, 2GB of disk space, 256MB of ram (512 recomended) and it went on... that was like 1-2 years ago so a 32MB card was still pretty high. It was probably 3D pacman with better graphics then halo or something.

 indeed. A lot game companies that try to re-release old classic games tend to try to update it to the latest and greatest trends while maintaining the classic gameplay, and achieve neither :P

Then again the game industry in general has been too obsessed with technology and often overlooks gameplay. Sure graphics have always been a big part of what makes fps gameplay, but they don't seem to realize that in other genres other things are more important.

Cybervillage mall trick: If you want to get a very high attack or defence WMD, buy as many items with high attack HP, create a WMD, scrap the defend WMD, you will be refunded 75% of it's worth, buy more items, and repeat the cycle.

I must of bough at least 100 Uranium rods this way. Oh, and create a WMD with a single WMD, because you will get two, the worth will be split in half, so you can scrap one and get 75% again.

It's not a bug, it's a feature, and it's cool. :D

Because the way it works is that when you make a WMD it will total up the worth of all the items involved and half of the wort goes for the defend WMD and the other half for the damage, so if you only intend to use one, you cash it in! With the uranium rod, you get a defend WMD with 0 defence which is useless, so you're not loosing anything by cashing it.

Pretty cool huh?

I'm still playing around with this though, to make sure there's no bug involved. It seems like you can do this to infinity by creating a WMD with a single WMD and it keeps splitting the worth, so it's like radio active half life with ICs. But eventually it runs out I assume, but it seems to go on forever.
