Ok, so the shard isn't as popular as it used to be (by that I mean populated.)

I was thinking that when the next content patch is added to AoV there's no reason that the shard can't get more populated.

Except one vital thing.......
When I started my an account prior to getting my old one back I wanted to train magery, however, I couldn't find any vendors selling LRC for noobs. Nor could I find any vendors selling much else. Not using an LRC suit would easily burn through the 10k gold we get to start, buying regs.

So my thought, is to "give" an LRC suit to new accounts. One per account. 15%ish on each piece, blessed, 5 resists on the armor. So you'd end up with 100% and 30 in each resist. No MR or any other fancy stats. I know that you sell an LRC suit, but it's a free-shard, you need to get people hooked before they spend IRL money on it.

This would enable people to train up magery/necro/chiv and actually be able to start playing the game.

At the moment, the lack of players makes it very hard to start from fresh. On OSI there was always a player run "noob" guild that gave out simple LRC suits to players just starting.

It just seems to me that RS and the other devs have put a hell of a lot of effort into the shard but the difficult start-up makes people leave (in my opinion.) So their effort is a little wasted in some ways. That not the dev's fault, it's the way the game was designed I guess. I've yet to find a free-shard as good as AoV!!!!! So please keep up the good work.

Perhaps I'm totally wrong, anyone like to add to this, or share their views?

PS. I'm only posting this, as I'd like to at least have someone in fel to kill now and again....... I didn't make a PK char just so I can have a protector to run spawns with!!!

One of our plans is to actually look at making it easier to get started. I'm thinking beginner quests. Lot of them, and various paths one can take. Lot of them would be skill based and help you gain. Some would maybe give you actual skill points, others maybe rewards (such as LRC items).

Right now, in standard UO, you get started and are basically dropped in haven and might have only a few quests available. If you are new to the game, it's very hard to get started without any help. We want to change that and make it so it's easier to start.

My problem with this is that LRC is a luxury. It should be achieved by either purchases or loot. It should not be given.

A better option, in my opinion, would be to turn on the random reagent spawn throughout the world, as well as boost the reagent plant spawn (unique to AoV as far as I know).

I am opposed to giving any new player an option for 100% in any particular form. I have started playing shards before where I was given everything upon login...and I was bored in 2 seconds. Done. I've played AoV for longer than I ever played OSI, and I intend to continue that. But, aside from donations from friends I made here, it was hard work and fun that achieved what I have.

Bah, I don't know. I just oppose great gifts upon log-in. There has to be something to work for, or what's the point?

There are plans to increase more reagent spawns throughout the world and increase the overall environment. A person who knows a lot of lore about creatures and plants will be able to use it to their advantage. The reagent plants worked pretty well for blending in to the environment and providing a decent amount of reagents.

There have been a lot of discussions about helping new players along and making the game easier to follow and several systems are either planned or in the process of being coded to make information and play a lot easier to get used to.

I'm glad to see you've been looking into it. I hadn't thought about starting quests, yes, that would seem to be more beneficial than just "giving" it to players.

Thanks :D

I just wanted to say that this was a nice thread to read when I looked today. Nothing better than reading ideas for making the server better and more populated. I personally had no problem starting out here but I am more used to playing pre AOS style UO. I think the amount of loot you get from killing a Troll here is more than I am used to getting from killing 50 trolls on a pre AOS server lol.

The one thing I remember having a hard time with was finding full spellbooks. When I started here it was more active so there were people to help. They pointed me to the chests in Luna. If I didn't have player help I would have never found them.
