State of the Shard 2011

Post by Death »

Greetings AOV!

As 2010 ends and 2011 begins, some new changes will be taking place on AOV. Many of the changes have been patiently waited for and many are well overdue. We are wrapping up with the big projects and getting back to the basics of the shard.

First up, we are investigating the reason for the lag and save times on the live shard. We will be moving services and looking into the root of the problem to increase playability and reduce lag on the live server. Also, the shard is being moved to a new server to improve the performance and provide better security and planning for shard backups, should something go wrong. Red is currently working on improving the server's performance.

Secondly, we are completing the SQL project and the new core. This is a huge step in getting the shard back to more frequent changes and updates. A beta shard will be available soon for testing, which includes an updated shard using a more recent client patch, and updated UOML systems including community collections and quests. These systems will be under a lot of testing to improve accuracy. There will also be other additions to test such as new custom systems and there will be a new pvp event to test out once it is completed.

While the new system is under beta testing, the live server will finally be getting some updates. The Christmas gift crash will be solved and presents will be dropped on player doorsteps. Also, a brand new event will be available on the shard for players to enjoy within the next few weeks. Details will be available on the forums as well as in game once the event is active. A live server patch will occur in February.

Also on the live server, we will be looking at combining all the shard services in one area. We are hoping to combine the GM offices and other services such as the casino and rune library within the same building which can be accessed through public moongates. We are in the process of planning out a new building for it.

That's all for now folks! Keep watching the forums and the shard for new updates.
