Server Move [complete]
In the next few days, I will be starting to move the live environment to a new server. This should be fairly seamless like last time, where after server wars you are now on new server. There will only be a slight delay while the save data transfers.
I have just ordered the server from http://www.caratnetworks.com and it will be leased again, but cheaper then our current server for about the same power
Our current server is a quad xeon 2.8Ghz with 4GB of ram and two 120GB IDE drives with no raid and we are paying about 167/mo as I recently added the 2GB of ram which added 20/mo to the cost.
The new server is a Core2Duo 2.2Ghz with 4GB of ram and two 320GB sata drives in raid 1. Raid 1 will make me sleep better at night.
The cpu sounds like a slight downgrade, going from 4 to 2 core and lower clock speed, but in reality this one is newer and is 64-bit, allowing me to actually use all 4GB. The raid1 alone makes this whole server an upgrade anyway.
Also went from 100mbps to 10mbps port but I don't think we even came close to using 10mbps let alone 100 anyway. If it really is an issue it's only 10/mo to upgrade to 100mbps.
Tomorrow is my last day of vacation so I will try to move most of the non UO stuff at least, such as my sites, DNS, email etc. I will post more news as this progresses.

The new server has not yet been provisioned, so I'm still waiting on that. I'll post more details once I'm in the process of moving data. This will probably take a week or so as my vacation is now over. I should have done this a week ago...

The server has been provisioned. I will start moving stuff over tomorrow and make sure all the web related stuff works.
I will probably wait till Friday to do the actual shard move. Using VMware Server 1.0 on current server which is VERY hard to install and I don't want to go through that, so I will probably install virtualbox which is easier to install.

Web services related data is now being migrated.
While those files copy, time to go finish an electrical job in the basement.

Migrated over DNS today, and it looks like it's working well. Working on web right now.
Tomorrow the ns1.iceteks.net and ns2.iceteks.net will be redirected to the new DNS server and the new server will now be serving DNS. This should be 100% seamless unless there are issues with the DNS configuration on the new server, but I tested and it seems to work fine locally.
Tomorrow I should be able to finish the web stuff including SQL, and also transfer the uogateway poller role so it runs on the new server. I still have mail to do which will be a huge beast on it's own.
Once that stuff is done and working correctly, I will start to build the VM environment for the shard. Hopefully I can start that on Saturday, so I'll have all day to do it and be able to finish it by night.

It's a one or more virtual computers running on a single machine. In our case, we have a Windows VM (as RunUO requires windows) running on the Linux server. All the other tasks such as DNS are easier to do in Linux, and more secure/manageable so that's why it's setup that way.
At some point I want to look at getting the shard to run on mono which is a .net emulator, but it's not 100% perfect and not all code works so it's a huge project for later.

Email services have now been moved. Was actually easier then I thought. Everything seems to work but I'll be monitoring.
There may possibly be some access issues in the next 24 hours as DNS propagates but as far as the shard and websites go, there should be nothing affected.
I had actually dedicated tomorrow to email thinking it would take long but instead mysql gave me a headache so I put it aside for now and tomorrow I'll try to figure it out.

Just got SQL to work, though it's an out of date DB but at least it works. I'll do a sync tomorrow to refresh and switch over the IP for the web stuff including uogateway.
This will also take the UOG poller off the shard for a few days so it will help rule out if that's what's causing the scheduled lag.

HTTP service migration currently in progress. I have shut down the HTTP server on the old server to make it easier to tell if DNS has fully propagated or not.

HTTP service move now completed, including uogateway and the poller.
This will also be a good test to see if the poller is the cause of the shard lag as the shard is still on the old server by itself now.
I'm done for tonight. I will sleep on the VM environment, as I'm not 100% sure with what solution I want to go with given I need to install from new anyway. Debating between virtualbox in a VNC session like my home production environment, or KVM. What I like about KVM is that it is a client-server model so I don't need to use a VNC session that is always on.

After days of struggling, I managed to get Virtual Box installed.
Currently installing Windows Server 2003 for the shard VM. I will configure everything such as backups, put the data on it, and do a test run of the shard.
I will then move the live environment once it is deemed stable. This should be seamless, other then about 10 minutes of downtime or so. I will announce once this is being done.

The AOV environment is now fully setup on the new server. Feel free to try it out by logging in to UO at:
96.45.178.187 port 1337.
Keep in mind that this is NOT the live shard, it is just a test and will be overwritten!
I will let it sit for a day or so to make sure all is good, then announce the move.

Until I ran that global command.
should be done soon, I think.
Let's just say after that command is done, it will be easy to tell if you're on live or not.

Was going to do the move tonight but need to hold off. The VM keeps locking up on the new server. I went to start moving files and it was completely locked up. Great.... Time to try to get another virtualization solution to install.
It's up now, I will leave it for a few days to see if it locks up again. I downgraded the version of virtualbox.
Still same IP info:
96.45.178.187 port 1337.
Please let me know what the performance is like.

So far so good with the VM.
Going to give it an extra couple days anyway before I do the move, just to be safe.

I think I will do the move tonight. I will just keep the other server active "just in case". If it craps out worse case scenario I need to move the latest save file back and move the DNS back. I think we're good now.
I will do this at the server wars restart so it should be seamless.

This is still a go. Just did final prep work and at the server wars restart it will be switched over to the new host.
Everything is looking good. Still same server name and everything, you will not need to change any settings.
