I am sick of people acting like emo people are stupid, ignorant, rude, spoiled, and posers. If people would really think about what they are saying, and that, maybe, they have no idea what they are talking about. Maybe people should make more of a stand instead of making fun of people who cut themselves. It makes me very sad to hear people laughing on that matter when people who really cut themselves have good reason to do what they do. I wish I could get this message out somehow, but I don't know what to do, I have tried to use youtube as an outlet, but nothing has changed... How can I help this, when I'm just a kid? I need someway to speak out, but all I can think of is asking to be on a talk show, which I am seriously considering (Dr. Phil, Oprah, ect.). I dont know if it will work, and I would be grateful for any advice. Thanks so much.
P.S- I have a great, great friend who is emo, and this greatly influences me to make people know... Please leave a comment and tell me what you think.

I find emo people can be super anoying, specially when they don't try to help themselves but just want you to feel sorry for them.
I had this girl in my guild that had a crush on me and wanted to go out with me (we're like 1k miles away) and I said no and she wanted to kill herself and stuff. *aparantly* she tried several times, but often they'll just say that.
At first I was trying to help her but then she never changed so I blocked her lol. I tried to hook her back up with her other BF since she kept crying about how she loved him (but yet wants to go out with me lol) but that failed miserably.

Emo is not a medication condition. You are not "emo" unless you choose to be. When you label yourself as "emo", then you are essentially saying that you conform to the image and subcultural idea of it. And thus, there is a degree of self-alienation that you actually work towards. Depression, cutting, etc. all serve to make you a more authentic "emo", thus you are less likely to seek solutions to whatever problems you actually do have, and may even make problems for yourself to further conform with the label and develop the lifestyle.

There's a fine line between regular depression and 'emo', and it's kinda hard to tell the difference at times. I'm no expert on the subject, but I would think cutting is more an emo thing than a depression thing - a visual symbol for others to see that is evidence of you self-alienation. It's kind of sad that we have a subculture that rewards this kind of self-abuse.

I agree with manadren and stasi here. Emo and Depressed are two different things. If your friend labels herself as emo, then she's emo. But if she's cutting herself because of problems at home or something serious, she's depressed.manadren wrote: There's a fine line between regular depression and 'emo', and it's kinda hard to tell the difference at times. Yeah, i'm one of those kids who hates emo kids. However, my definition of emo may be a little different than yours. Emo is, to me, when a kid acts like an outcast and conforms to the idea of non-conformity to try and fit in, while trying to make people feel sad for him or her just because they want attention. Some emo kids cut because they want to seem MORE emo or try to look more authentic so they can get more attention. Cutting because you want to hurt yourself or the pain in your life is too much to bear, is one thing. Cutting because you want attention is something completely different.
If your friend was cutting herself because her life truly sucks, then i wouldn't label her as emo. That would be depression. But wanting attention and trying to be somebody you're not and falling so far into that facade that you would make yourself bleed is one of the most dumb and annoying things some kids choose to do. That is what i can't tolerate.

Lexi did'nt label herself as Emo, Flower. She does'nt hate life, nor does she cut herself anymore. She is officially Satanic. and trust me, I know more about Emos, Satanists, Goths, and other similar groups than I hope any of you will ever have to know. But Satanists apparantly do not worship Satan, rather, they think of it (Satan) as an idea. The basic philosophy is that there is no afterlife, only this life, so make this one as good as you can. Thus she is not Emo. Emos liking cutting is a bit of a sterotype. Not all Emos cut. Nor do all Emos wear black and listen to Emo all the time. The term "Emo" refers to a person who hates life, and is somewhat suicidal. The term Emo has come to encompass many areas of dark thinking that reek of teenagers and depression. I could go on and on, but I'd like to stop, as you would all think that I am "Emo". And that you probably don't want to hear most of it.

Yes, Church of Satan satanism is more of a hedonistic philosophical belief system than a deity-centered religion. In any case, they're all the same... they are people feeling the need to label themselves in order to think and act a certain way. Tribalism meets modernity.

I swear I don’t usually gripe about fashion, but stop wearing skin-tight, low-rise jeans! (They make your legs fall off, among other things.)

actually, chris, that myth has been busted: http://mythbustersresults.com/episode86
the jeans were probably cutting off his circulation to begin with.
Stasi, i think you're right about the fact that a lot of teens use religions such as Satanism and Wicca to be unique, however, they are actual religions, and saying that only rebellious teenagers believe in them is incorrect.
What I dislike most about emo kids is whining. They whine and complain about life all the time. I can understand if they're trying to reach out or get help for a problem at home or something, but when they're just complaining for attention, that really annoys me.

What I did say is:
Or, perhaps you misinterpreted this...Satanism and Wicca, the belief systems of rebellious, "unique" teens the civilized world over.
... as meaning that everyone in these religions/belief systems are "rebellious teenagers", but that's incorrect. The Church of Satan, to me, is little more than a way of looking at morality, and rebelling against Judeo/Christian/Islamic religion. However, why people feel the need to label themselves and join a church predicated on a philosophical position, rather than any belief in deity is what I said it is, modern tribalism - the need to self-label and be a part of some group. Humans are social animals so this is natural, though it can diminish one's ability to think more objectively and independently. I feel that Wicca is somewhat similar, though it has more to do with actual worship of a being, or at least nature as a whole, and many people get into it because it's a warm and fuzzy type of religion - fairies, spirits, magic, peacefulness... as well as "alternative". The thing is though, even amongst pagans, there is some "anti-establishment" rebellion against Wicca.... Read up on hedgewitches.Yes, Church of Satan satanism is more of a hedonistic philosophical belief system than a deity-centered religion. In any case, they're all the same... they are people feeling the need to label themselves in order to think and act a certain way. Tribalism meets modernity.
In any case, you said what I was *trying* to communicate:
With the point being that in trying to be unique, they are merely conforming to yet another label/group.a lot of teens use religions such as Satanism and Wicca to be unique

A guy should never wear tight jeans unless his boyfriend likes it or he's a model. If he's the second, he probably has the first anyways =P
And besides, if you can wear very tight pants without *something* showing, doesn't that just mean you have an unimaginably small package?

Queer influence in fashion is pervasive and usually beneficial, but gay men are most likely overrepresented victims of emo culture. This distresses me not so much because of a fashion bent, but because a large number of a small minority is purposefully dressing antithetical to my definition of eye candy.goalguarder12 wrote: A guy should never wear tight jeans unless his boyfriend likes it or he's a model. Lol, i mean...girls can wear tight jeans cause they don't have anything that would show up down there, but guys do...idk, maybe they make special pants for emo males that are slightly larger in the front...area...so it still looks like the jeans are tight but there's no bulge? Idk why a guy would want to do that either though, does he want to look like he's got no male reproductive organs (junk)?Chris Vogel wrote:

Emo stands for emotional. So I always ask myself, "If emos are so emotional, why the heck aren't they ever happy?". Truly depressed people don't need to wear black and eyeliner and all that bull crap. Probably 1% of emo looking kids are actually emo. In grade 8 I had 10 out of 12 common depression systems and I never thought about wearing black or anything.
The emo look, is just for attention. Lots of people are actually emotional and don't wear tight, black clothes. I know a few scene kids myself, and they actually wear girl clothes and other unnecessary things to get attention.
If you want this "emo" populous to actually be taken seriously, don't expect it to happen in this life-time. My friends think I'm plenty emotional, but that's just because I have meaningful conversations with them instead of, "Woe is me, I'm an artistic vampire trapped in this world of mortals."

I was definately depressed in junior high. Like...seriously depressed. I never cut myself or wore black. But wished i were dead every day. I hated myself. (remember the WW threads?) Emo and Depression are completely different things in my opinion.
