The Research of the Fire Steeds

Post by Death »

Day 1

We went out to search for the legendary fire steeds. We were a group of 4: Tameka Gulch the legendary tamer from Minoc, Ricardo Hata the legendary tamer from Moonglow, Sylvester Magnis the creature researcher from Umbra and myself, Langley Addams from the city of luna. I have been a pet researcher for many years working with Sylvester to study some of Sosaria's most interesting creatures. My previous research led to the discovery that hydras could be tamed when calmed and used as formidable allies.

As my story goes on, we had just entered the kirin passage in search for a legendary fire steed. We had gotten a tip that one of these rare creatures had been recently spotted in here while a young tamer was trying to pursuade a ki-rin to join him in battle. We later found this tip to be false as no fire steed was seen.

Day 2

We did not stop the search for a legendary fire steed. We decided to search more areas related to fire. We entered the delucia passage in the hopes that the heat from the lava waterfall would have attracted some fire steeds.

We searched the whole cave but only found a few angry lava lizards and some pesky snakes. We had to flee after some pyrolisks heard our voices and stared daggers at us with burning eyes. As we began to see the red flame leap around us, we were saved by a group of phoenix who began tearing apart the pyrolisks. We did not stay to watch.

Day 3

After 2 days without finding anything we decided to take a new route and stop at the town of Zento for a glass of sake. As we talked to each other and listened to the sweet tune of a bard playing the mandolin, Ricardo piped up: "I hear there's a volcano in Isamu-Jima somewhere. Sounds like a great place for the steeds to gather". We gathered our belongings and headed out of Zento. When we exited from the Isamu moongate, we ran up the path quickly as some hiryus drooled at our presence and expected some meals. Luckily Tameka brought her tambourine and was able to confuse the beast away from us.

We entered the bottom of Mount Sho, the Isamu-Jima volcano but were again disappointed with the lack of fire steeds. Where have they all gone? Were they extinct? We began to lose hope but Sylvester brought back hope into us when he said "We'll find them, they can't hide forever".

As we returned to Zento late in the night, we made a campfire on the outside of the town and sat on benches made from ashwood. A few cranes lurking about came up to us as we fed them pieces of bread we had purchased at the bakery. As I sipped on my warm green tea, I stared into the flames. My mind emptied and my thoughts were clear: Fire.

"FIRE dungeon! That's where we will find them!" I jumped up, spilling my cup of tea on the ground. We grabbed our horses (Or in Ricardo's case, his savage ridgeback) and we galloped towards the fire dungeon.

Day 4

We had planned to go to the fire dungeon early in the morning but we soon grew tired and set a spell in Serpent's Hold for a few hours. When we awoke, we picked up a few supplies and headed for the opening of the fire dungeon. A few fishermen on the dock noticed us before our entry and shifting their eyebrows up and down they said:

"I hope you aren't planning on going in there. Nasty fire elementals in there."

We ignored his warning and headed on inside. He was right about the fire elementals. As we crossed an unstable rope bridge, we were surrounded by a group of them but with a few bardic tunes and some cold spells, they were no match for us.

We traveled deeper and deeper into the dungeon, going up floors and passing strange creatures in shrouds with catlike heads. The evil mages in fire usually left us alone as it was apparent neither of us were up to fighting.

At last, as we reached the highest floor, we found one.....a fire steed. Tameka used her tambourine to calm the beast who quickly took a liking to her presence and joined her allegeance. We all stood there, gazing at the marvelous beast. It was blaze colored and glowed a soft, fiery light. Its hoofs were surrounded by thick flames but its skin was like velvet, smooth to the touch.

As we all admired the beast, we were unaware of the burning eyes that were on us. Suddenly, a humus minion flew from the shadows and tore at us. Flames from the minion flew through the air. Our new steed darted through the air and attacked the minion. To our surprise a field of flames errupted from the ground around the minion and began burning the humus minion. The flames were no match however, against another fire creature.

Tameka whistled and the steed returned to her. "We've got to get out of here" she said as she mounted her new steed.

"What about your other horse?" Sylvester asked but before anyone could answer, a fireball tore through the air and burnt the poor horse to a crisp.

We did not need to stay any longer to realize that we needed to get out. Tameka was the first to ride passed on her new steed, followed by the rest of us. The humus minion roared behind us and we could feel hot flames at our backs.

When we reached the bottom of the stairs, we were trapped. A group of hundreds of slimes blocked our way. The humus minion gained on us, threatening to melt the platemail armor right off us. It seemed like the end of us, up until Tameka's steed decided to show its true power.

The horse suddenly reared up in the air and we noticed a massive ring of fire emerging from its hooves. A couple of slimes moved back out of fear while some approached out of curiosity. The horse slammed its hooves on the ground, making a sickening smack as it stepped on a couple of slimes.

That's when we saw it:

Fields of fire emerged from under the steed and began melting the slimes. Tameka yelled "Come on, I have an idea!". She rode through the slimes as field upon field of fire appeared from the horse's hooves, destroying any slime in our path. We rode and rode and finally, the humus minion gave up trying to chase us as we passed the rope bridge.

We returned to Serpent's Hold and stopped to breathe, thankfully that our new steed helped us cheat death. When I return to Skara Brae, I'll have a lot to write about this fantastic steed and its abilities.

Sound pretty cool.

So... does this change affect old firesteeds? Or is this a power that only new ones will have?

Fire Steed's Newest Abilities (Old abilities like fire breath and pack instincts remain the same):

-Immolate: Calls down a 3 x 3 fire field on the target, immolating them with fire damage. Highest fire damage is in the very center of the field. The steed will randomly decide when to use the immolate ability. Both tamed and non-tamed fire steeds can do this so beware when trying to tame one. The fields last about 20 seconds

-Higher resists: The maximum amount of fire, cold and physical resists that a fire steed can spawn with have been extended so it's possible to find steeds with higher resists than before.

-Flame Ride: This ability can only be performed by the steed when their taming master is using them as a mount (Riding them). Approximately every 5 minutes the steed has a chance of using this ability. When it is used, the steed will begin to place flames around its feet. If you run or walk with the steed, you can control where the flames go. The flames will damage anything it touches within the reputation system (Blues cannot harm other blues but if you're a red it can harm innocents). 50 Flames will errupt from the steed (Approximately 5 seconds worth of fire ride).
