what software can you not live without?

Post by scherzo »

there are some handy apps out there and i'm curious if anyone has used, is using a program they found great for spicific tasks etc.

for example i have a program called

foulderprintplus

and what it does is 'index's what is on a drive, or disk i.e. dvd and creates a text document for it

now when someone like myself has 200 dvd's of backups of everything you could think of and I wanted to find by backup of

winrar

i use windows search and search drive E: ( which i partitionied to only 5 gig ) drive E: containes all the text documents of the folderprintplus exports of each dvd, cd etc,

ea cd is labeled 'cd 1' - cd 2, cd 3 , etc

now when I search it finds it in disk 50

and i know where it is immediatley :)

programs I can't live without, at least the ones I can think of off the top of my head:

- Firefox
- VMware / VMware server
- Notepad++
- Ms RDP client
- Winrar / 7zip

Probably a ton more, and I won't get into Linux ones as the list would be too long. :P

Pretty much anything that comes with Ubuntu, plus Thunderbird and a LaTeX distribution. The reason Ubuntu fits me so well is probably a combination of having good defaults and me being too lazy to change the defaults.

Oh yeah forgot to mention thunderbird. I often take it for granted, but it seems theres very few free email clients that support Imap, so Thunderbird is definably in that list for me.

lol IE is the portal to spyware. Switch to firefox™ or Opera. Also I don't know how people go without tabbed browsing.

Haha. Use firefox, never look back eh. :P

And yeah forgot IE 7 had tabbed browsing. IE7 is horrid to use though. I just hate the whole top interface, its like messed up or something.

I dumped Thunderbird for Evolution, Firefox for Epiphany, and OpenOffice.org for AbiWord and Gnumeric. (LaTeX remains on standby.) The switch is going okay so far, but Gecko – and therefore Epiphany – can’t use native GTK+ widgets for HTML forms, although I do believe a fix is in the trunk. Oh, and AbiWord has a weird mixture of American and British English – colour, color, and centre at first glance – despite my preference for American English.

WMP classic is FTW, I use that myself. I hate the later versions. They're just bloatware now, and so are most other media players.

Depends on what I'm doing, but for the most part, I surf with IE and I surf a lot. I have a tightly-tuned installation of Firefox for when I want to peruse lower security webspace.

Why do you say I'm crazy?

I have two different media players because both give different functionality for different codecs, taking video captures, and playing DVD's.

Firefox, Winamp, Azureus, Irfan View, media player classic, winrar, godfather

I view most of my videos with Media Player Classic or Zoomplayer. The only reason I even touch WMP (and IE) is for Netflix instant viewing.

Synergy is a godsend at work, I use the same keyboardmouse to control 3 PCs (spanning 6 monitors). Lots of stuff to keep track of... Also at work IE and outlook (no choice), VMWare Infrastructure client, GSX client, Netbackup, putty, frontpage (no choice), RDP, and VNC, and a bunch of apps with web based interfaces.

I can't live without some kind of music player. And right now it's WinAMP because Microsoft Vista sucks.
