Decent windows firewalls are hard to come by. Some are too invasive, while some are unstable, while some hardly have any decent options.

But if you're not using a nat router I STRONGLY suggest one, even if its 1 PC. It will block all incoming stuff by default as your PC will be "hidden" behind it. So only ports you explicitly forward will be open up to the outside.

Yeah but probably about the best one. Problem with a lot of firewalls is they'll block stuff without your concent and not give you a way to unblock it.

Like on a LAN, you don't want netbios blocked, but most will block it.

Kaspersky Anti-Hacker Firewall is my favorite. It offers a variety of protections and can be fair non invasive if you wish, or keep the PC on total lockdown if you need it to. They had a server vesion of it as well that I believe allows you to access from remote once you setup a password and an IP or Mac Adress (I think it actually tracks by both if you want.)

Never heard of that one, I'll have to look into that, been wanting to find a firewall for the shard server. Using windows firewall now which provides port security but not IP blocking. If I ban someone I want to just ban them from the whole server altogether. another reason I wish RunUO ran natively in Linux, could use IPtables.

Actually... RunUO is coming along pretty well with the Linux stuff.

As far as a firewall goes, it depends on what you are trying to block. I don't like firewall software at all because it is too invasive and slows things down a lot. I'm assuming you have a cable modem or DSL. Your best bet would be to get a simple Linksys (or preferred brand) broudband router. This by itself actually acts as a firewall in a sense that incoming traffic only makes it to computer if they request something, or if ports are forwarded intentionally. With that in place, all you need on the computers for general security would be 2 things. The first would be an active and constantly updating virus scanner. The second would be some sort of spyware and adware program that has some kind of immunization or some kind of managed way to block very specific stuff rather than blindly blocking everything. Here's some suggestions in general:

Linksys broudband router
AVG Anti-virus software
Ad-aware and/or Spybot

Aside from that, use the windows firewall, and keep windows and programs up to date.

Yeah RunUO works with mono now. Though thats pretty much emulation, so its slower and more cumbersome. Would not recommend it for a production server.

In windows you can use the command "route" to modify routing tables to get a similar effect.

About firewalls, forget the software ones. Get yourself a good hardware router and flash DD-WRT onto it and it will give you all the control and protection you need.
