Homeschooling

Post by Reaper »

So what do you all think about the American (or Canadian if there is one) homeschool "system?" I myself am not too fond of it. On another forum I used to go to I asked why people homeschool their kids, and it was unbelieveable to read how "evil" public school is. Not that I don't get that about every Sunday. . .after I finally finished with that thread, I am so proud of my public education.
I often wonder how many of those who teach their own kids are qualified to teach at all, or at least teach the grade level. All the homeschoolers I ever knew were taught by their parents, tutors on occasion in high school. I rarely have a problem with the kids themselves, it's their self righteous parents that get to me.

I also don't think high school is be "homeschoolable" though I would prefer none at all.

i have alot of homeschooled friends. like half my friends are homeschooled. i dont know how evil the parents said public school was but they're prolly right about some stuff. some of the stuff i hear people talking about in school i prolly would have been better off not knowing. lol. especially if the parents dont want their kids to start swearing, you hear plenty of that at school. my brother has even started saying stuff he shouldnt, which really bugs me cuz hes in one of my classes now and he never shuts up! arg.

I don't think public schools are evil exactly, but are not necessarily the best equipped. If the parent (or whoever doing the homeschooling) is has the aptitude for it, I'm sure it would be better. In a homeschooling environment the teacher has a lot more opportunities to tailor teaching methods and curriculum to the students needs. On the other hand, the social aspect involved in public schooling is equally important.

Friend of mine down in GA, his kids are home schooled. His wife actually teaches them, along with the kids of a few of their friends. I never heard them say that public schools were 'evil' but just the same they weren't entirely impressed with the quality of educations their children would get in the GA public school system. I will say this though, I've met his kids and they are surprisingly intelligent for their age.

I think a number of parents who home school their kids are a bit self-righteous. If you're trying to protect your kids from the 'evils' of public school, that's one thing. If you can actually teach your child better than the public school system can, that's another.

i never said that, im just saying some parents dont want to expose their kids to that stuff at all.

yeah, it really depends on if the parent has the time and ability to teach their kids well. i know some parents who are really good at it and they have really smart kids. i have friends who have been homeschooled their whole lives and they're prolly smarter than most kids who come out of public school.
