Oprah opens school for girls

Post by Bookworm »

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa - Oprah Winfrey opened a school Tuesday for disadvantaged girls, fulfilling a promise she made to former President Nelson Mandela six years ago and giving more than 150 students a chance for a better future.

“I wanted to give this opportunity to girls who had a light so bright that not even poverty could dim that light,” Winfrey said at a news conference.

I'm not so sure such an extravagant school is really a good idea in a country where other schools lack even basic necessitites such as books.

yeah, but if she just gave the money to the schools to buy books, etc it wouldn't be as big a PR move.

I think Oprah is a very wonderful person; with much generosity.....but I do not also understand the extravagence......but again, it will probably all work out for the girls.....still....its a wonderful opportunity......Bonnie

Whoohoo, 152 students' lives might be better as a result of their having gone to Oprah's 'generosity'.

Africa will be saved from AIDS!

It's sad that Africa is one of the few places where big names make token charitable gestures that very few, if any, people would dare critically analyze in public for fear of being demonized as being racist, elitist, and blah blah blah.
