obscene and racial slurs on public chat

perhaps there should be a filter on public chat. Some of our players are young. There are even whole families playing on valor. Most of the players can control their outbursts, but some of them cannot. Personally, being called a nigger by another player on public chat has little harm. But what if Apple Puff picked up that word and started using it? That word is unacceptable in society today. I will leave it at that, if you want me to write a thesis on the forums about the effects of words like that in society I can and will do it. Lets leave that stuff out of public chat, no good will come of it.

And this is why I did not want to have a global chat. Even with filters and such people will find ways to get around, and we can't be there all the time to moderate.

I will think about if I just want to remove it completly.

Ugh, I highly suggest you DO NOT get rid of global chat.

I understand how language sucks. . . but I can attest to the language being used on the shard is little in comparison to many other enviroments people are exposed to on a daily basis. The bus is worse than here.

I just love the chat feature and its worth these imperfections. It makes us close as a community.

Yeah I see what you mean, but I see the chat being annoying to some in the future, then people might just get frustrated and leave. It's a double edged sword really.

And with all the coding we have to do I really don't want to spend time adding filters and stuff, when I could be working on something better.

the UO side filter DOES filter chat. I said over chat dick and it filtered it.

So the discussion should end right there. If you do not like bad words then ignore/filter.

Most people won't know about the filter though, I'm thinking of people who first join, and the first thing they see in chat is swearing or someone pist off, it will turn them off.

Good point. I was just worried. When there is only 10+ people on its nice being able to talk to em all then trying to find them all throughout Sosaria.

If a player doesnt know how to use the game filter or is offended, they will get offended whether they see stuff in the chat channel or are standing at the bank and see it above a players head. I don't think removing the chat channel will help. I think the option to join the chat channel at your own risk is a good way to handle it.

With a built in filter option and the ability to join/leave pub chat at will censoring really should ne be necessary. Plus Public Chat is one thing i really like about the shard and keeps the community close like was said before. And theres one more reason to not Censor.

With out trash talk there is no reason to PvP.

The public chat is a very useful tool and I'd rather not see it vanish. That being said, people will still take offense to certain things so that's why we added the option so that they can just leave the chat system and come back later. The filter is a little silly in some senses but for the most part, you can tell what the person is trying to say anyways......MOTHER******.

Yeah I just added it for kids mostly, but I removed some less offensive words like "shit". Really I'm more concerned about racism words.
