I've just been thinking, remember the tsunami, how everyone was helping each other, etc, even people needing help themselves were helping others. And in general the affected areas were pretty 3rd worldish. The reason so many deaths was because of lack of technology to know what was happening, and lack of place to go, given the terrain situation.
Then you have the hurricanne in the US, probably one of the most developed countries, and yet the social issues going on seem to be much worse then the tsunami. You have people looting stores (though I understand some of them are taking supplies for suvival, but TVs and VCRs don't count ), people taking advantage of trapped people and raping them, etc... Then there's the media that's being racist in the way they word what black people are doing, compared to what whites are doing.
Also they are not disclosing some information for political reasons. For example, lot of countries have wanted to donate, but the US goverment has actually DECLINED some donations, for whatever reason. Australia decided to do the donations directly through the Red Cross to bypass the whole goverment route of donating, so that the money goes to those who need it. I'm guessing countries who tried to donate through the goverment will do the same.
Just curious what other people think about all the controversal stuff going on.
And this is not really to bash the US, I bet it would be similar if it was Canada. It's more an observation that just because a country is more developed, disasters are coped with much worse then would be imagined.
On other note though, it's good to see the generousity going on, as from what I hear they are getting tons of donations and supplies coming in, so that's definatly good.
My prayers go out to everyone in bad situations, especially those being raped, beaten, etc.

I think a big problem was that there was no one who was able to step up and be in charge and have the authority to be in charge. Everyone was waiting for someone higher up the ladder to coordinate things. I personally think that as soon as the crisis was identified, the army should have swooped down and taken over, but then you have to determine who the person is who will be identifying the crisis. The lack of pre-planning for something like this that was so possible is utterly appalling.

Yeah I think lack of authority is probably the main issue, and in a crisis like that it's almost understandable.
But there are instances where even authorities themselves are joining in instead of at least trying to stop, or ingoring, since like said in a news article, if they did try to stop it would just cause a riot since there's not enough cops so best thing is to just keep working on saving people and I think that's what most cops were doing.
But definatly, the army should be involved but pretty hard when they're all in iraq.
