My latest toy!

Post by Red Squirrel »

My first external HDD, well actually an enclosure, so I put my 60gig that I did not know what to do with. :D I hate keeping such good stuff as spare so had to put it to good use. It costed me less than what a 1GB usb key would of costed me. :P

Only thing that sucks is that if you screw the drive in, it does not fit, so it's pointless to be able to screw it in, but it does not really move too much inside anyway, and it's not like I'd move it while it's turned on. The blue lights are the HDD activity light so it flashes when there's disk activity. pretty slick. I eventually want to make myself a battery pack for it so I don't have to carry the whole power adapter with it if I bring it somewhere.

i've been thinking about getting one of those to store media on actually, video files, music, and such seeing as how i will be getting a laptop soon and it will be handy for editing stuff.

Where did you get yours and how much did it cost?

I still prefer normal hard drives, if i need to take anything anywhere, i just burn it to a DVD-RW.

Going completely off-topic, but has anyone ever got into xbox-modding? I've stuck a 120gb hard drive in my xbox, and installed software that lets you play music and videos on it, transfer files directly between your xbox and tv, and lets you backup xbox games to the hard drive, so that they load faster.

The best part of it though is that it lets you run emulators, so i can play Genesis, Super Nintendo, Gameboy, and even Playstation one games on it. I must have about 100 genesis games on there, its great playing Sonic on your xbox :)

Hmm they don't have it anymore but here's some others:

I paid about 40 bucks for mine so a decent deal. But if you don't have a spare HDD you want to use, I'd suggest getting one that already has the HDD, as it will be cheaper then buying the enclosion and a HDD.

Mind you with mine it's easy enough to pop it open and switch drives, so if I had a bunch of drives I could just use them as externals. This will also be good for when I need to retrieve data from a customer's drive or something.

You have to screw it in, but I did not bother and it was too much of a tight fit anyway since the screws add about 2mm less of clearance. the drive moves around a bit inside though but it's not really harmful as long as it's turned off.

More toys!

Just ordered a bunch of these for my backup server.

http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/Sea...p?Sku=K450-8018

HDDs will be next, but as a start I'll have a 200GB drive and a 300GB drive. I think I'll use those both as data drives and just use one of my old 100MB drives as the OS drive. I'll just install trustix linux or something small anyway.

Oh and some of these for my main server:

Yep I have it sitting on my desk now, waiting for 2 more to come in, and 2 more removable disk trays, and I'll be set to build my backup server.

Now it's semi built but no video card. One of my coworkers will bring me an old one he has lying around. I don't see the point of buying a 256MB video card for a server.
