Some bonehead at work reformated the one internet PC and I have to reload all my apps. Ok, so how do you get new tabs to open in the background? I forgot and I've been through all od the options and preferences.

Just in case others are curious, background tabs in Firefox can be opened in the following ways:<ul><li>A link can be middle-clicked. (My favourite method.)</li><li>A link can be clicked while the CTRL key is pressed.</li><li>The “Open Link in New Tab” option can be selected in a link’s right-click menu.</li><li>A link (image, etc.) can be dragged to an empty spot on the tab bar. (Over the “x” to the far right is just fine if you have no empty space.)</li><li>Perhaps something I have forgotten</li></ul>All of the above items also apply to bookmarks (middle-clicking even applies to bookmark folders), although that wasn’t always the case. I don’t know how I lived without being able to middle-click my bookmarks. :)

EDIT: An unordered list is more appropriate.

Yes for new tabs to open in the background and not the foreground, go to :

TOOLS>OPTIONS>ADVANCED
Uncheck: SELECT NEW TABS OPENED FROM LINKS

This option must be unchecked.

Never argue with an idiot. They will bring you down to their level and beat you with experience every time.

Maybe I’m just weird, but the old wording seems to make much more sense.

I don't think it was that simple. I do remember having to ask on a different forum how to get them to open in the background. It never was obvious.

I looked through the en-US language pack of Firefox 0.8.

A portion of pref-advanced.dtd (en-US) in Firefox 0.8

Code: Select all

<!ENTITY loadInBackground.label       "Open links in the background">
Firefox 1.0

Code: Select all

<!ENTITY loadInBackground.label       "Select new tabs opened from links">
It’s hard to decide which one I dislike more! The first one doesn’t fully describe the option, and the second one just looks weird. Even though I dislike the second one, I must admit that I can’t think of anything better. Red’s version is nice, but it doesn’t fully describe the option either.

Wow, nice work. I agree. It should say "OPEN NEW TABS IN BACKGROUND"
Plain and simple.

The problem with “open new tabs in background” is that not all tabs are opened in the background even with that option enabled. Tabs opened with the “new tab” buttons and shortcuts still get focus.

Leave it up to a bunch of guys to totally over-analyze a situation.

Just click a bunch of crap until something happens, that's what I do.

Sure, you might not have fancy schmancy whippersnapper "tabs in the background," but I promise you that you'll have a more interesting browsing experience. ;X

I meant getting a new tab by clicking FILE > New Tab, the “New Tab” button in the toolbar, or the keyboard shortcut CTRL + T.

I hate tabs. I like a new open window. At least if you accidentally click X, or if one page stops loading, you don't have to close everything.
