I need a printer that can deliver proof quality prints up to 8x10's that have a good archival life thus a dye dub, color laser, or thermal inkjet. but the key is that it has to be portable and easly connect to a laptop aka no only scci port..

Get a color lazer printer. They're very expensive, but do incredible jobs. Well think of the quality of a normal lazer jet, but in color. I want one.
Oh wait, but those are not really portable so it may not be the answer for you.

but how fade resistant are they? I am kinda looking for something that will be easy to print on location that will last a long time kinda like a dye sub that will also be cheap to use long term.

From what I heard lazers are probably the best for anti-fading, since the toner is fused right into the paper.VictorEM83 wrote: but how fade resistant are they? Not sure how well they do with photo paper though if that's what you plan to use. I think the gloss would actually melt but maybe it would not melt too much, and actually end up being a good thing as the toner would be fused in pretty well. I think we have photo paper here I should try it just for fun to see what the results are.

not portable like some of the small units out there but definitely not that expensive either. That one has USB 2.0 but does have the option for the standard RJ-45 cable as well. No idea how they are in the flesh; just saw this thread and was reminded of a recent PC magazine advertisement.Red Squirrel wrote: Get a color lazer printer. 400 bucks for a lazer color?? Wow... they're over a grand here and that's not counting the 4 toners. But still a good price compared to bublejets which will end up costing more in ink over the same usage.

I am still debating but I have limited it down to:
Kodak 1400
HP Designjet 30n
and the
Epson Stylus Photojet 2200
