modded pstwo

In a few weeks i'm gonna get a PSTwo (the new [thin] kind) and i was thinking of getting a mod chip too. The only thing is, i've read from a bunch of places that mod chips'll make the laser kick the bucket awfully fast, sometimes even if you have summOne's fix. Does anyone here have a modded one of these, and if so, have you ran into any problems?

Here's a thread I found, it seems it depends on what model of PS2 you have:

ya, i've seen plenty of things like that
the only version the new kinds come in is 12
looking into it more between now and the first post though, it seems like MagicVKX+ and summOne is a pretty safe combination
here's hopin'

a friend of mine works at gamers, she said that one in four of the slim ps2's that came out at launch would overheat and be ruined after a few hours worth of use, and i don't really see why you would want a slimmer one.

and what do you get from modding a ps2? can it do all the things a modded xbox can?
