"And I think everybody understands what the 'next steps' mean," Rice told reporters after a meeting with NATO foreign ministers and European Union officials
Man, what a nice lady. But, hey, maybe we can get some other countries to help us foot the fuckin' huge bill this time around?

They were talking about this on the Daily Show yesterday [it was a old episode] in an interview with a New Yorker journalist broke the story that the Bush administration had been planning on attacking Iran for a long time. Rice is making these demands knowing that Iran won't live up to them, just so Bush can justify an attack, supposedly sometime this summer. Troops have been in Iran for a while now scouting out potential targets.

There's always the "What's in it for us?" argument. So far it's been oil. You don't really think Iraq was about terrorists or liberation, do you?

Why would I think that, there's not even any terrorists in iraq, well there was but now they moved to Tora Bora, I guarantee they're all in there at this very moment, the US goverment is just too stupid to realize it.

Honk if you love Jesus, text if you want to meet Him!
We do have oil but for some reason the US does not realize it. Or they're scared of the mad cows, since they happen to be in the same area. And as for lumber, well they can just keep increasing the taxes as they wish, we'll sell it to iran to build bombs... out of wood!

I wouldn't say that America he Bush administration is stupid. Okay maybe some in the administration aren't the sharpest pencils in the box, but the administration as a whole isn't stupid. They know there is oil in Canada as there is in the US, but it's a matter of how much. Secondly they know the terrorists arent in Iraq anymore, they just don't care.

I wonder what the US would do to the Iranian government if we were to invade... would we keep the same system, just with our own puppets, or forcefeed the iranians a democracy?
Archived topic from Anythingforums, old topic ID:1730, old post ID:23718
I think they're hoping to hurt the current government just enough to urge on a revolt by the iranian people, where the US will be sitting there just waiting to help them setup a new democracy... but note the word hope I just used there. *cough* What they will really try to do will probably depend on how well the elections turn out in Iraq, ie if anyone will actually accept them.

The voting went smoothly enough (in comparison to other days in Iraq. Compared to, say, Britain, Canada or the US, though, it's quite remarkable where you can have several deaths and car explosions on one day and call it a good day...).
I'm interested to see how the newly elected government treats the US. They know they need our help to keep the peace, but many people and terrorists want us out.

Seriously though, the troops that are out there have been there way too long as it is, and now he wants to start another war? And he promises there will be no draft...

I think just about the entire professional military apparatus understands that instituting a draft would be a big mistake. There won't be a draft and there won't be a war in Iran on the same or similar level as Iraq, at least not any time soon.

My brother-in-law is in the Reserves, and he is almost done with his second tour in Iraq. They need to increase the regular army somehow, so that people in the Reserves aren't called up for so long.

Indeed, I'd say they're planning on having the war on a much smaller scale than Iraq.. I'm just doubtful that it will work out all that well, and that it will end up almost as bad, if not worse.

I'd be hesitant to even suggest it'd really be a 'war'. I doubt regime change would be the primary goal as it was in Iraq and thus require a massive reconstruction effort. What you'd probably have is a set of targets that'd be attacked with cruise missiles and the Air Force. I doubt there'd be any dedication of regular ground forces to the effort. Iran anticipates a bombing/missile attack which is why they just made a statement that bombing targets wouldn't eradicate their nuclear program. The fact is, the government and the various think tanks all agree that some day the so-called rogue states such as Iran will have a nuclear arsenal. The idea is to delay that as much as possible. The question is, will efforts to delay the inevitable result in a more radicalized 'rogue state' that'd be more likely to use such an arsenal or supply such weapons to terrorists?
BTW-shouldn't this thread be in the discussion/debates forum?
