Merge AF with Iceteks

Before everyone freaks out, I'm not going to do it, just curious what is everyone's toughts on this.

If I were to do it the way it would work is that all members would be added to the Iceteks database, and for those who are registered there and here, the post count would be added together, for those who are there but not here would stay the same, and for those here but not there would be added with curent post count, profile info etc...

As for posts, I'd probably create a forum called "anything goes" or something along those lines, or just keep it as "cool hangout place" and possibly new subforums would be added such as debates, world news etc.... once the forum structure would be figured out, all posts would be move in the relevent category.

That way it would be easier in terms of management (modding, etc) and there would be twice the activity. Well sort of.

The domain would probably still point to the home page pulling off the data from the relevent forums, but the forum/topics would point to the Iceteks ones.

Mind you this is just a thought that came to my mind and it's probably not going to happen, but it would be easy enough to do, and would just take allot of planning and maybe a few hours to write the script to convert everything.

On the one hand it would probably boost activity and make things alot simpler. One the other though, the two forums have distinctly different atmospheres, each with their good points, and I don't know how that would change if you tried to combine them.

I would favor keeping the atmospheres separate, but I would also understand the need to simplify things when looked at from a strictly business standpoint.

I was thinking of that too, that's one of the major factors that is keeping me from doing it. But the corporate view is an interesting way of looking at it also. It's what makes Microsoft so successful.

Well one thing is that activity is really low, and whatever I try to make it go up does not work. The skin was a very big step in the right direction but after being told that "it looked like puke" and "what the fudge happened and this place looks like crap" I was pretty much forced to remove it, not bothering to do a backup of anything.

Google is going to send visitors but does not mean they stay, the skin would of made them stay, or at least made the chances a bit higher. Since a non-default skin shows that something actually gets done at the forum. Anyone can take 5 minutes and install a forum. There's millions of forums like this out there, so the odds of someone searching for a forum and joining this one out of many others, is slim. So definatly something has got to be done to make people want to stay. Working on the home page, hopefully that will help, but something for the forum itself still needs to be done and it probably won't be a skin again...

When I joined, the skin had nothing to do with my decision. I saw the news thread, the science thread, the debate thread, and the fact that a filter existed. I think the content is more important than the skin.

This is true. When I joined I didn't care about the skin....but maybe now the skin is important in keeping the interest of regulars. I don't know.
When I joined this place was booming and even then they were saying it wasn't as it used to be. They said it was going down hill and seems as though they were right. I don't post in all the threads so I don't really know who's still here but I sure don't see some of the folks I use to.....and I do find them at other forums posting the feck out of them.

I had posted it at a skinning forum and they seemed to like it but there was not really enough chance for many to reply. I had been given a few suggestions such as use another color then black for the borders, and it's all things I would have experimented with new years day.
