Ill. Gov. Seeks Violent Video Game Ban

Gov. Rod Blagojevich is proposing to make it a misdemeanor for businesses to sell violent and sexually explicit video games to minors, a step that other states have tried with little success.

Blagojevich's proposed legislation would prohibit the distribution, sale, rental and availability of mature video games to children younger than 18, spokeswoman Abby Ottenhoff told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

Current Illinois law does not prohibit selling or renting video games to children, regardless of how violent or sexually explicit the games may be. Retailers are not supposed to sell them to people under 17 but have been blamed for lax enforcement.

I think it is smart not to let youth do whatever they want. A parent should determine when a child is ready to be exposed to different aspects of life. However, I doubt this will do much, and I certainly think it should be up to the state, county, or city to decide. If a state doesn't think limiting violent video games makes a difference, then it should have the right not to ban them just as much as ones that do.

I know as a youth that you always think its a crappy rule, but it is there for a reason, some of your peers have not matured enough to handle being exposed to this. For those who do have a problem with it, perhaps it is your parents you should really be having an issue with if you think you are mature enough to handle these "graphic situations".

I didn't say anything at all, and yet you think I thought it was a crappy rule :P
I just thought it was an interesting article, that's why I posted it.

I personally don't care; my parents buy me anything M rated if I ask nicely, mostly cause I'm holding down a good job; they trust me and I got good money.

Personally, I'm unsure how they are going to enforce this rule in software stores; the criminals involved are a kid and a clerk. The clerk is glad to take the money and the kid is glad to get the game. Who's going to report them?

The same could be said of minors and cigarettes, no? Yet it is enforced, more or less.

Yes, but it's quite obvious for a cop/teacher to spot some punk kids smoking cigs or holding a box of cigs :P

But these games, since their boxes all look pretty much the same, the only way to tell if they are Mature is if the cops see the tiny M on the box. Many parents won't care (unless their children go mad and go carjacking or something and blame it on a game). I'm assuming, though, that many retailers will comply with this law, except maybe for Mom and Pop shops.

That was more my point, that the enforcement exist for cigarettes, even though there is no incentive for the retailer, I guess other than being fined. I can assume the same for software sales, and that's certainly better than nothing, no? Small business would definately be the ones that are the hardest to check though.
