Mutiny in Iraq

Post by Visionary »

A U.S. military spokesperson announced Sunday that 18 soldiers refused their mission last Wednesday. The reservists say they refused to deliver contaminated fuel that could cause helicopters to crash, which the Army denies. The soldiers also objected to traveling the dangerous supply route in poorly maintained, unarmored vehicles. The Army has launched an investigation into the incident. (CNN)

If a soldier is ordered to torture someone, then we expect them to disobey, but if a soldier is just concerned about their own safety, then I don't see disobedience as an option.

Wish we had more details, like the vehicles: how poor were they?

here are some of the details as I understand them. They were sent to a location with fuel to be delivered. When there, they were told that the fuel was contaminated, meaning the multipurpose truck they were using hadn't been cleaned properly, and were rejected and sent back to another base. During the night, someone higher in charge ordered them back to the same base, with the same contaminated fuel. The officers pleaded their case for over an hour (keep in mind, this is going through some bad areas), but the commanding officer ordered them back there anyway. Of the vehicles in that group, 75% have been properly armoured, their vehicle was part of the minority that had not been refitted, as was most of their unit. That's what I have as of now, as more facts come out, this may be proven false.

Huh,
I guess if I was in their situation (crappy fuel, UNARMOURED car) I might lose the will to follow some orders.

yeah, esp. if you know that the cargo that you are delivering is just going to be turned back, because it wouldn't work in the aircraft due to contamination, it's just putting yourself in harms way. But maybe there is more to it.
