PC Upgrade FTW
I'm about 1/2 done my PC/server deployment, feeling a tad better now.
took components out of clear acrylic case, put them in new server case. Had some trouble with the NON STANDARD hard drive bays. (why do they do this?) but I rigged up something... Thats 3HDDs btw, took em from the server as this used hardware is the server upgrade (for my local home server). That 700w PSU actually USES 700w when idle, so my UPS complained, but it eventually took the load.
After a few changes in the bios, "new" server booted up fine, right up to the borg logon screen. W00T for Linux - no need to reinstall despite the major hardware change.
Then I gutted the rest of the server case which was everything but HDDs, added my new hardware to that case (liked that case better as workstation, hence the swap). It's complete and sitting behind me, but my parents are in bed so it will be too hard to set it up in my room without noise. I'm downstairs on my parents' pc right now. Took 20 minutes to log in as myself on the domain, definatly not the DC, given it's brand new (well sorta) hardware. It also has a wooping 3.5GB of ram.
The old server hardware will go in the clear acrylic case once I clean it up and will go to my sister which has this super crappy compaq so she'll be happy to have a real computer. That hardware is actualy my first custom build, so its quite old, but still usable with win2k and general web browsing. Heck I used to do autocad renders on there, so it does have balls. It also ran tons of stuff as a server. It powered TC1, along with a p2p vm, a firewall vm, and a public access ssh/ftp server for uo script exchange.
I'm super looking forward to trying my new machine tomorrow. Still need to wait for the video card to come in so for now I'll only have 1 monitor.
It's like Christmas!

In regards to EVERY post you put up regarding computer components, programs, running systems, etc., I can honestly say, I have no idea what you are talking about. But it sounds smart.
I guess if this is like Christmas for you, it's like me getting a 144 color Prismacolor marker set.
But to each his own. And if I ever need someone to tell me ANY information about a computer, you will be the first person I ask.

Actually I learned a few things out of this.
1: the new mobo connectors have a detachable 4 pin connector. this DOES NOT plug into the seperate 4 pin connector in the motherboard. I'm lucky I did not fry anything...
2: a 700w power supply flipped on but the PC turned off still draws 700w, so turning off my PC wont save hydro, so I may as well keep it on like I always do. 700w is insane though... figured they'd only draw what they actually use.
3: case companies suck at following standards. Screw spacing on common components such as hard drives means nothing to them. Be prepaired to pull out tat 18V makita if you are installing a hard drive in a new case.
I'm just so glad the server turned out fine. I was really scared something would go wrong. Just did a compile in 2.33 minutes on TC1, that would normally take 8-10 minutes under the load I just put the server on.

I remember setting up my first custom-built computer... it was a 486DX/2-50 back when those first came out. Fastest PC you could buy at the time. Man that thing ran Desqview super fast; I could have two DOS 6.22 sessions going at the same time with good speed! That meant I could have my BBS up on one and play stuff on the other session

Actually no joke think I clocked a compile at about 2-3 minutes last night. Thats on my old machine (which is now the new server). Thats also with 3 VMs running. The server had just been turned on too so it was processing a bigger queue of incoming email and other stuff so its load was rather high.
Today I finished off my main machine, did all the custom wireing for the fans and stuff (hooks up to the front of the PC and my desk, I can use either switches) and now I'm doing the fun task of installing DRIVERS, YAY!!! And all my programs and stuff, and restoring profiles (such as saved ftp sites) and all that stuff. One of the first programs to install was firefox so I can go online and check forums.
I'm addicted to the internet, I just realized that today.

Almost done installing stuff. Patched up UO already, just need to retrieve my razor profile backups from the backup server since I forgot to back those up before the format.
That and install .net framework, which, no matter how fast your machine is, takes ages to install.

Here's a "Benchmark"
On the new PC I'm doing a file transfer and an installation at same time, cpu is barely taking a hit.
On server I got 3 VMs running and a UO server compile took only a bit over 2:30 minutes. (they used to take about 10 minutes under these conditions)

My bad thought I had posted them:
Destroyer (workstation)
AMD Athlon XP dual core 5600+
2GB of ram
120GB HDD (currently old drive partitioned in two, will move data to 2nd HDD and repartition to keep this one for OS only)
500GB HDD
Radeon 7000 video card
Windows XP pro
Borg (main server)
AMD Athlon 64 3200+
3.5GB of ram
120GB hdd
200GB hdd
500GB hdd
NVidia Gforce 4200 TI (overkill for white text on black, I know )
Fedora Core 5 (original installation)
Old server was:
AMD athlon 2000+
2GB of ram
same hard drives and same OS install

Why is your PC > Server? O.o That's...so backwards. Other than the video card of course, that's totally understandable.

Server requirements are less since it runs Linux, and its all mostly background related tasks. PC is what I do mostly everything on. Mind you lot of stuff I do from the PC but actually gets processed on the server. Though if I had the money I'd make the server way more powerful too. And make it use sata drives so I dont have to take up all the IDEs and have no CDROM drive. (never know when you need that)

Haha. I ended up removing it, it was FAR from accurate lol. jumps from 33 to 37 then back to 33 was weird. cpu temp does not just randomly jump up like that then go down right away.
