How do they work: that can get complex especially if I get into subnetting and such, but basically IP addresses are network addresses for computers.

My router has an IP address so I can connect to something and something can connect to the router, by using the IP. IPs are the machine's way of knowing where another machine is.

When you type in a url the first thing that happends is that it resolves the domain (using assigned DNS IP) to and IP then it connects to the server of that IP.

To find out where it's from, you can do a tracert, it will list every router that you hit before getting to the specified IP, and by the names of the routers you can usually tell where it's from, for example:

Code: Select all

C:>tracert www.anythingforums.com

Tracing route to www.anythingforums.com [66.113.130.200]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

  1    31 ms    16 ms    31 ms  New-Liskeard-33.nt.net [209.226.51.33]
  2    16 ms    31 ms    31 ms  NL-Gateway.nt.net [209.226.51.3]
  3    32 ms    46 ms    32 ms  enroute.nt.net [209.226.50.74]

 21    63 ms    63 ms    78 ms  anythingforums.com [66.113.130.200]

Trace complete.
So we know that the server, or location of the machine with that IP is near Chicago.

You can also use http://www.whois.sc/[ip] to find out more info, it works on domain names too.

dnsstuff.com is also a pretty good site to check out if you want some info about an IP. It has a whole bunch of tools to find out information about IPs and domain names.

for example, if you typed in the anything forums ip [66.113.130.200] in to the IPWHOIS Lookup you would get this:

Code: Select all

Country: UNITED STATES

NOTE: More information appears to be available at AN94-ARIN.

Using 0 day old cached answer (or, you can get fresh results).
Hiding E-mail address (you can get results with the E-mail address).

Please note that using any of these methods Red and I have mentioned, you cannot get information on any individual user, but you will get info on their company or ISP, which should be enough to find the general area where the person is or to lodge a complaint against that person if they are doing something bad.

Also Joe our forum has an IP address (http://65.37.63.173/windstorm) Or you can have the Address as letters (http://www.clik.to/windstorm)

65.37.63.173 <--- IP goes to my PC which is hosting the forum

65.
is the main network

37.
is my ISP's Front line address

63.
Is my Subnet numbers

173.
Is my computer number on the sub network

See how that goes?

Well it gets more complicated when you get into subneting.

For example 192.168.1.0/32 etc... I don't even understand it myself, probably something I should learn though.

actually what Red wrote is subnetting, it's just a different way of writing it. the /32 referes to the number of 0s [in binary] are in the subnet mask.

Yeah I was just putting the /32 as an example. :P There's /16 /128 etc... that I've seen. I honestly don't understand that stuff that much, I just know I'll have to learn it in Cisco class and Im looking forward to it.
