I'm looking for a better text editor then vim. I hate how vim is very tedious and if you accidentally hit the wrong key at the wrong time it screws everything up, and exiting/saving is a pain in the butt.
Basically I'm looking for something like edit.com in msdos. But would that type of interface even work through ssh?

Vim is the king. Learn it and you'll love it.
If not, then use the queen (open to debate this one!) emacs.

I just need a text editor, not an entire office suite.
Vim is just too tedious.
For example, to exit I need to press esc, : and Q, but if I screw up like press something else by accident, it will just go in all sorts of menues and I end up getting stuck where keys don't do anything and I have to close the terminal, loosing my progress. I just want a edit.com style editor, much easier to use.

you could try out pico or mcedit.
pico comes with pine so all you have to do is run pine once.
mcedit looks a lot like msdos's edit program. it uses the function keys to access the program's menu, though.
there was another console text editor from a linuxquestions.org post that was close to msdos's edit program. i can't remember the name of the program though... i do remember the post was in their programming forums.

mcedit rocks. No cryptic commands, or strange keyboard combinations.
It resembles the old "Norton Commander" thus the name "Midnight Commander"
