omg is that a computer tower?! At first glance, I thought it was a monitor, then noticed the pci slots (or what appears to be).

Yep, that's a PC tower with the side panel open, which aperently allows you to get into the computer.

Yeah no kidding. I've opened other compaqs and this one is the worse I've seen. Trying to find drivers for this dinosaur is also prooving to be difficult, especially since compaq no longer exists.

Compaq does still exist, believe it or not; it's just now a wholy owned subsidiary of HP. (Heck, if it didn't, I wouldn't have a Compaq Presario R3210CA that I bought after the merger)
Another driver suggestion is to browse over to the HP Canada site, click on Support and Drivers and where it gives you an option to search just put in Presario ****** where * is your model number.
Good luck

Managed to find them, someone at another forum just happened to know the exact drivers that model used. AC97 sound and intel graphics. This morning I power the thing on, BSOD.... I sooo don't miss win98, for it's random "I just feel like crashing today" moments. The best thing in win98 is scanreg /restore and sol.exe.
