can not get them to do anything but dial up and sit there.

can not even get the winme to ping yahoo.

winMe computer uses the same phone line and server this xp uses.



windows 98 has different phone line and uses same server has the same trouble.

tried different dial up numbers with them to go to different servers but got the same troubles just sits there after it connects

have reinstalled all updates i have for win98 but still not working.?

not too big a deal about it not getting online i can get downloads for it from this one.

but it also does not let me install media monkey player. it messed that up and i had to uninstall it then i tried to reinstall it? now it gets a error from some block and runtime error each time it trys to start and it also does not matter what version i use to install i get the same error.


something is going on for those two computer os's to all of a sudden mess up that bad..

?? last i remember win3.1 and win95 had major issues when the released winXp. i wonder if they are messing them up just to get people to need to buy new software??

but any way does anyone know how to get them fixed with out buying new software?

in other words WHAT THE BLUE BLAZE'S IS GOING ON HERE? I SPENT ALL DAY AND MOST THE NIGHT REDOING AND REDOING AND REDOING THESE and they still wont work.

How to restore or repair the registry with Windows 98 Registry Checker (ScanReg)

Situation:
You are unable to boot into Windows 98, the system is displaying error messages, or there are other indications that your registry files are corrupted. You want to use the Windows Registry Checker to repair the registry files or replace them with backups.

Solution:
The Norton Utilities Registry Integrity repair procedure used in WinDoctor, System Check, and Optimization Wizard may be unable to run or to complete when unrecognized forms of corruption are present. This is a safety feature to prevent the possibility of further corruption to the registry. If Norton Utilities is unable to repair the registry, try the Windows 98 Registry Checker utility (ScanReg).

About ScanReg

The Windows 98 Registry Checker utility has two files: Scanreg.exe and Scanregw.exe. The first is used after starting the computer to an MS-DOS prompt, and the second is used after starting the computer into Windows. These utilities can be used to restore registry backups or to repair the registry.

By default, Windows 98 makes a backup of your registry every time you start your computer. It keeps one backup for each of the last five days the system was successfully started. If your system has a corrupted registry, you may be able to restore a backup that was made before the corruption occurred. Otherwise, you can use Scanreg.exe to attempt to repair the registry files.

How to restore registry backups
Use one of the following methods to restore a backup of the registry.

Since the registry keeps configuration information for your programs and hardware, when you restore a backup you will lose all changes made to your system after the backup was created, which means you may need to reinstall some programs and drivers.

To restore a registry backup from within Windows 98

Click Start > Run. The Run dialog box appears.
In the Open box, type scanregw.exe and click OK.

To restore a registry backup from MS-DOS mode
Restart the system in MS-DOS mode.
If the system does not automatically start in MS-DOS mode when attempting to boot into Windows 98, hold down Ctrl key during system startup until the Startup Menu displays, and choose "Safe Mode Command Prompt Only" from the Startup Menu.
At the C: prompt, type scanreg /restore and press Enter. You do not have to be in the C:WindowsCommand folder to run the command.
Choose which backup to restore. You should have a choice of registry backups from the last five days the system successfully booted. You can also restore other backups from either the hard drive or floppy disk. The backups from the last five days will be in the format RB00x.*, where RB stands for Registry Backup, and x is the sequence number of the backup. RB000.cab is the most recent backup.

How to repair the registry
Use one of the following methods to repair the registry.

To repair the registry from within Windows 98

Click Start > Run. The Run dialog box appears.
In the Open box, type scanregw.exe and click OK.

To repair the registry from MS-DOS mode
Restart the system in MS-DOS mode. If the system does not automatically start in MS-DOS mode when attempting to boot into Windows 98, hold down the Ctrl key during bootup until the Startup Menu appears, and choose "Safe Mode Command Prompt Only" from the Startup menu.

Also, try giving your ISP a call... I know with certain connections or providers they ask you what OS you're running, and if you're running a lower version than that (so for example; you're running 2000 Pro but try to connect using ME, 98 or 95) it won't let you.

i thought they merged all those together by now jryan? but will look for dial up numbers for those os's that might be what is doing it.

all the help for msn was in broken inda english ya know what i mean.

Are we talking 1 PC or 2 PCs?

If 2 PCs with differant OSs'-are the routered together?

If the XP works (a third PC?) I'd think it was a router config problem.

solved

trouble was there was some software i removed, and some adware i removed just not sure what was the cause but i am saying it was the software.

but something messed up the winsock file.

so that is what was going on.

and the msn people in the country of india which where their help is now?

told me to uninstall the os?

just for a winsock error? now i don't know whom is the dumber of the two me for unistalling software by the authors uninstall file or msn's help for telling me to delete everything and start over?

i am pretty sure that it is not me.

but man am i am glad i found by way of help in another forum i posted in a link to a winsock fix program. ( now cut that out you all post in other fourms too) i just am big enought to admit it ? well my stomech is big enough anyway?

but the program fixed the winsock file i got on line and updated the computer and it fixed all the files that were messed up.

so all is good
