How do you make a virtural

I am wanting to know how to make a virtural hard drive.
as in telling the computer to make a folder and use it as a perment hard drive.
i am tired of having to find the right cdrom just to play a stupid game.
so i want to have a virtural drive so i can copy the contents of the cdrom in to that virtural drive and install it from there never again using the cdrom drive just to play the game.
i have a program from 2003 that will create v hd's from a folder but it wont make them perment. i have to recreate them each time i reboot.
i also have a cdrom copy program that makes an image of the cdrom's and keeps them in a folder but i have to start that program and load it's virt hd with its cdrom image. which means i have an extra program running taking up ram.
and that still involes the same number of steps as putting the real cdrom in the computer.
so having a virt hd that i can use to install games from that need the cdrom is the answer but i can make it perment can some one here tell me or can you do an article on how it is done?
thanks.
