At the computers at school they have Real VNC at my computer at home I have VNC. Is it possible to VNC into my computer at home from the computer at school? Or can I only VNC within my local network?

Depends on the outbound firewall configuration. If at home your VNC is open to public (not recomended) and at school you are allowed to connect to the VNC port, then it will work if you try to connect to your IP.

See thats the only reason I dont want to do it because If someone goes port scanning and sees that my VNC is open then I am screwed.

Yeah, but what you could do is only allow access to that port from a certain IP range, like your school's, so that way security will be enhanced a bit more, and use a huge password so brute forcing will take very long.
