I have a problem with my Windows 98 SE. It's graphics driver or SOMETHING is screwed up, and it's got one device (unknown) that has a exclamation point next to it under the Device Manager. I asked someone about this who said if I got rid of it, the computer would run smoothly without problems. I can't get rid of it.

It's labeled PCI Multimedia Audio Device. And I've pretty much destroyed the internet looking for drivers. Until I can fix it, I guess I'll be stuck in 16 colors and 640x480 resolution forever.

Does anyone know how to fix this? Or is it a problem not with the PCI Audio thingy? (By the way, all the devices are Intel)

Are you sure the yellow ! is not the video card? You'll have to open up the PC, take note of any numbers on the card (just pray that it's not built on, since that's usually a PITA to find the right numbers) and type it in google and go from there. driverguide.com is decent for finding stuff, that's usually where I go. I get in this situation every time I have to clean install a customer's machine.

Yeah, I did some research on PCI Multimedia Audio Deveice, and it's Microsofts default way of saying you have drivers for your sound card missing.

I don't see how that'll fix the colors and everything, but my sister's fiancee, who's very good with comps said it would.. I dunno.

Yeah that will fix the sound, but you probably have another yellow one for the video card. That or it's just using a generic driver of some sort, so either way you have to get the real drivers for that video card.

Well, in reformatting, why did it do this? I know it erased all the drivers.. but was something wrong with my graphics card to begin with? (It is obsolete)

Well, I'm not sure if you clarified this or not, but what type of video card do you have? Is it PCI, AGP, or built-in? That might be of some help.

I never use built in video on my own computer. I have to with other people who use it, but never on my own. Takes away from my memory and don't you think Windows does that good enough already?

LOL true, especially XP. 192 megs or something like that. I remember back in the day when computers had 128 megs of ram with a 4 meg built on video card. man that sucked lol.

you did try to let the computer search for new hardware and let it set up the software for it didn't you?

did you try windowsupdate.com and see if it could find the proper driver for you when it checks for updateds. if it does not find any then go in the section it has for viewing your already installed updates. and find the newest dated one you can for video drivers and redownload that one it should fix the trouble by re or overinstalling any messed up files.

if that does not work then you might just have to reboot in to the bios and set it up to use the proper video card from in there. don't get me going on what to click on what bios option as i have no idea because all bio's for win98 were not the same.

you just have to look in there several times and read what the video card or graphics card is listed as, and see if there is any others listed that you can change it too.

that is the very last thing i would do though.
