June 2 (Bloomberg) -- An earthquake with a magnitude of at least 5.6 struck northeastern Taiwan about 12:20 a.m. local time today, the U.S. Geological Survey's National Earthquake Information Center said on its Web site.

While the Central Weather Bureau in Taipei said the quake's magnitude was 6, no casualties were immediately reported. A temblor with a magnitude of 6 can cause severe damage.

The earthquake was centered 22 kilometers (14 miles) east- northeast of the coastal city of Suao, at a depth of 63.4 kilometers (39.4 miles), according to the Geological Survey.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., the world's largest producer of made-to-order chips, based in the northern city of Hsinchu, said the quake had no immediate impact, according to spokesman Jinn-Haw Tzeng.

TVBS, the Taiwan cable television system, reported a wooden house had collapsed in the city of Taoyuan.
