Was just browsing the dell site for fun, since while having to do so at work I realized they have insanely low prices compared to what it would cost to build.

This is a 1U rackmountable server. I'd use it as firewall most likely. This is about the price for a basic pix, but with this, I can install reletively anything on it. Heck, if I come up with a very good configuration I could set these up and sell 'em as firewalls.

Only problem I'm not sure if it has 2 nics or not, probably not, but try building a 1U server for that price.

Wow.... Even if it is a Dell, you probably should go for it.

The Florida DMV had like three big butt servers. They were so sexy looking.

Yeah, I figured sure it's a "clone" but for that price it's pretty hard to beat. They actually have desktops for like 200 bucks, I might actually buy one of those instead for the firewall, it's bigger but they are super quiet (really don't know how they manage that). I think I could actually manage to put it on top of the main server, so in terms of space usage it would not be too bad.

If I want to updrade then I'm out of luck, but if I only use it as firewall it will be an install, plug, and forget, type of thing. Would not even bother with setting it up with the kvm.

Hmm now that I think of it the desktop might actually be a better idea, even though the fact of owning a Dell Poweredge server sounds cool. The big corporate equipment stuff.

In my own house when I move (probably in about 3 years or so) I'll have my own server room and racks, then I can buy lot of 1U units.

I am not sure how they are doing it either red that is a cheap price.

i think they are going cheaper on the stuff as there is not many people that are buying this computers anymore.

the tv ads about virus's wipping all your files keeps people thinking

"what would i want to buy one for then?"

Nah, I'd just use it for home stuff, well that one would be a firewall since it's nice and slick. About the same price as a pix though, I could get a pix too if I'm dishing out that type of money, and it would run the IOS software so I can learn Cisco at the same time. hmmm. Maybe I can find a used pix on ebay, I'd have to check.

Not really, would be double the price if I built a machine like that. The case alone would probably cost a few 100 bucks because it's rackmountable, but then again if I built myself I would not get a rackmount case as I don't have a rack to start off with.

The downside of these servers is that they leave very, if no room to expand. well in terms of HDD you have tons of room to expand, but as for PCI slots, there's like 1 extra. Had to open one up to install a fax card. Quite different then a normal PC, cooling is insane too, and actually pretty quiet.
