USB Drive Problems

I finally got one of those SanDisk Cruzer minis, 128 MBs of fun empty space. It took me long enough to connect it though, it never seemed to detect it most of the time. Now that I got that out of the way, for some reason I can't fomat the disk at all. It says it's not formatted and to format it fully. When I try that though, it says the disk might be damaged. Before I go back to Staples and return it to hopefully get a new one, I wanted to know if there was some way to fix it, or erase everything on it (there's a bunch of oddly named folders and files taking about 40-ish megs of space on it.

I'm running Windows ME if that helps anyone....(I know it doesn't help me much *kicks computer*).

I thought of something when I woke up this morning. What if that powerful magnet they pass along their merchendise at Staples to stop their security devices messed up the USB drives insisdes. Is that possible?

hmmm maybe. But you'd think they'd have it properly setup to avoid this though.

Yeah, it makes you wonder. I'm biking over there in 30 minutes. I'll cut down all who stand in my way of an exchange :crowd:  .

I exchanged it quite easily, although this one is still giving me the same problem. As soon as I moved a file into it, it gave me a blue screen and said the drive can't be read. I'm going to try it on my dad's coputer tonight. Maybe I can keep the drive until I get a laptop.

It's still doing it Shane? That's odd. I know when I bought my flash drive, it was run over the magnet, and it works like a charm! Did you delete any folders on it when you started? Sometimes the drives have a cruzer lock folder which allows you to encrypt your data. If you delete the folder, it might screw up the drive (Although I haven't tested and more importantly, am NOT GOING to). It should not have any problems on ME, they are made for any OS above 98 (Driver required of course). That could also be the problem, u might need to update the driver for it in order for it to function properly (More than likely not the problem), but u never know with ME

Yeah, I did. That was what was causing the pain in the butt-nes at first. It started loading up some drivers, then it came across one it couldn't find, so I canceled it and searched for it on driverguide or what ever it was called. I got the driver and tried plugging back in the USB to start the driver loading thing again, ...and it wouldn't start up. Eventually I noticed all my other usb objects weren't on either. When I shut off msn they all came back on suddenly...although I had restarted my computer several times before that.

There was no folders in it. It had 122 mbs left of free space, 0 taken (128 MBs my foot :P). I'm hoping maybe my computer just hates me and it'll work on a laptop (if I ever get a job *hint hint*). My dad forgot to try it out last night. Maybe I can turn on his computer and make my own profile on XP. I kind of...never used XP before :dosgonebad: .

It works like a freakin charm on his computer (XP) :banghead: . I brought it back here and tried putting a file on it, BAM! Blue screen error again. I suppose I'll just keep it. Maybe....I'll have use for it in the future. I'd rather not return it to Staples. They shall hunt me down no doubt.
