Downtime Checker Program

I just made a program, in about 2 days or so, which runs on linux and checks a list of hosts for their status. (online or offline) and if the status changes, it writes to the log, and executes a script which I can edit without recompiling.
I will use it not only to monitor certain host's statuses, but to monitor my internet, which since the 5mbit "upgrade" has been going off and on. (if multiple huge sites are reported down at once, 99.9% of chance is that it's my connection)
In the script I also made samba send a popup to my windows machine, so I will know in real-time as a host goes down! Still some debugging left to do but once I've tested it for a bit I may make it available to the public. Right now it's hard coded to check every 5 minutes, but I would make that configurable when released.
