Ok, I searched and found nothing((to make sure I'm not posting an already made topic)). Just guessing it goes here.
At one point I had DSL, and all three of my familys computers were on one network, and we had a shared folder that we could all view.
Now we have cable, and we are still on a network. I have found the shared folder and all that, but it won't let me access it. I've made one of my folders on my desktop shared, but my dad's computer can't find it. I'm on Windows 2000, and I have "My Network Places". He doesnt. Can someone help me?

shared folders on a dsl might be alright but not on a cable modem.
as your not the only family to use that cable modem line, meaning anyone in your town or neighborhood could view your shared folder.
if you have it all unlocked on your computers then anyone on your cable modem line is able to get in to your computers.
i think what your running in to is the safty features the isp for your cable modem is using to keep your computers safe and your not going to get to share them with out letting the rest of your town and the internet see them also.
sharing on a cable modem is inviteing hackers in to your system.

You're using a router right? Since if yes the internet connection should not have any affect on it, but if it was shared directly online then it could be a problem, both because of security and functionability.

I'm using a router. And trust me, in the neighborhood we live in, no one has cable internet, none-the-less do they have internet at all.
It sees my dad's computer as a near-by system, but it won't let me access the folder that he set as shared. It won't even let HIM access it on HIS computer. I can access his printer though, his printer is set as my defualt printer.

Hmm very odd situation. Did he try sharing a different folder just to see if it works? If yes, it might just be the thing of undoing the share, and resetting it.

I made my own shared folder and he can't even access it. How does XP access shared folders? I can't find "My Network Places".

odd... one thing with XP and 2K they are really picky with that. All computers have to be logged in under the same user and password for it to work. There might be ways around that but I'm not too sure how. I know in samba (linux) I can set it to work with any logged in user, or specific users.

You might want to go look in control panel under administrative tools and local security policy's and make sure you are allowing others to access your shared folders.
