ok here is what i am talking about.
if you have a huge crt moniter it gets hot. if you have it on a desk with a wooden shelf over the moniter the shelf can get hot and the papers on top of the shelf will be hot.
now that is only on a desk where there is a back and sides that would make a little area pocket for the back of the monitor to sit in.
so in that case you would be really cooling the shelf down.
but does the monitor get hot and mess up of the heat?
yes it does. it can get hot and after a long time the epoxy on the cards in the back of the monitor can dry harder then needed and become brittle and crack lossing seal around the wire hub on the end of the crt. now the seal does not do anything but keep the wire on the card. if the card has cracked enough you could get the wire to move and short out with another wire. thus causing the tube to shut down. or blow out like a burnt out bulb.
ok ok now i know you tv repair men are going nuts about right now. so i will stop you from going insane with this.
the only time i have ever seen that happen is on 10 to 30 year old televison sets. and only in places they were used in extreame climites.

the above is only some useful information which is in the same usefulness as telling some one how to turn off the television by the button on the set it's self.
but still there is another reason for cooling the monitor. not much heat gets in this way but it does get in.
the monitor has heat conducting wires connected to your computer depending on your set up it is one to 3 or more wires. since heat will travle the wires it will then get back in to computer unit. and heat up the video card and what ever other cards are connected to it by wires or the power supply.
now as i said not much heat gets in that way. but if it gets in that way then a little can get out that way also. right?
which means you can cool your mointor down and after awhile when you have the mointor off the wire will be cooler and the heat will be transfered to the monitor through the wire. not much for fast cooling but over night it might help if your running downloading all night with the monitor off.
for this cooling i got a fan for 4 dollars it is just sitting in back of the moniter blowing air up from under the desk where it is cool throught the back of the crt monitor.
you don't want a loud fan just one like the inside of the computer would be big enough but they are not made to be quite the one i got is.
and it is a
nortex personal fans 3 inch personal desk fan. for house hold use only model number #WFC-301 it has a 120V AC 60HZ 0.17Amps 12 Watts ratting.
it is quiter then the fan in the computer and keeps the monitor cool and the shelf cool.
now if you have a small 13 inch crt monitor your going to get heat but not much this is a huge 19 inch or 20 inch crt monitor so it puts off the heat.
