today, after having done nothing...oe will not send mail but does receive it.
i get connection to server failed...protocol smtp port 25 secure ssl
no, socket error 10060
error # 0x800CCC0E

was on with my dial up tech pple...they had me remove all my mcaffee stuff (which was stupid since nothing changed). then had me type in dns server numbers under network connections /properties.

they said to call microsoft....
should I do a system restore?
as far as I know, I've not added any microsoft updates today...
my outlook express is version 6

any help is greatly appreciated.
paula

What do you have for your pop3 server settings? Could be that your virus scanner screwed around with them, especially if you use pccillen. Had it happen to me.

Yeah in most cases it's mail.yourisp.com for both pop3 and smtp. Though on serverside both are handled by a different port, and different software.

Contat your isp about it, since it sounds like there's problems at their end. Their pop3 server might be down or acting strange.

Tech support can be a pain though.... I know my isp always asks dumb questions like "do you have a firewall" "is the line plugged in" "check to see if the computer is on and call back" etc

Open Internet options & under security, towards the bottom check

'prompt for user name & password.'

Username and password were already prompted, i checked.

I did look on google, typed in the whole error #, they give me drastic things to do...like uninstalling oe and re installing. based on my limited experience that sounds dubious.

what else can i do? keep calling tech people at my isp and pray I get someone with a clue?

at what point do you just give up.
been online with my isp for 3 hours...they had me re-install internet explorer from THEIR disk and I dont like that...can I get the "regular" ie back...
OE now wont even receive mail...it gets stuck receiving it forever and then the win32 app shuts me down and Im "online" but can't disconnect but it says I"m NOT online. It wont send still either.
they've reconfigured everything.
I've done 2 system restores...which then messed up the internet connection big time, was getting some 700 error message.
is it xp? is it time to just do a fresh install? do I need sp2?
is there a god?

Are you using one of those crappy isps where youo actually need to install their software for it to work? Like AOL or similar? Since it could be that the software is conflicting with SP2 if you installed it, or is simply conflicting with XP, or something else you installed.

sorry just got here.

you did not need to get on line and do any of that stuff they told you to do.

most tech support just lke to make you thing your doing something when they know it is the isp's trouble.

i get that not connected to the server error also.

but not all the time.

what that is the server your dialing into is the trouble it is getting hit hard with transfere requests and can not take any more for a short time some times it is 2 hours some times it is the next day before i can get the server to let me on.

the trouble is being caused by larger and larger numbers of people getting online songs and movies either payfor ones or pirate ones

they have broadband and dont care how large the download is they don't realize it is playing havock with the isp servers.

just get all finished setting up that you were redoing. get a good registry cleaner and a good system cleaner then run them and then run defragmentor and start from where you were the other day just like normal and if it dont log in to the server for a day or so realize it is or will get back on later. if you can not get on for 4 days that is the time to panic.

but your server will get unclogged shortly and get you back on,

you might beable to do one thing when picking up email try doing the alt control delete keys and opening the taskmanager. look in it for the msimn.exe and right click on that then on the menu go to the set priority and click on realtime.

that will speed up your email program for that time only. if you want to do it all the time you will have to keep doing it that way.

other then that your error is not your fault. unless it is a bad regstriy or your prefeche or swap file needs to be cleared.?

good luck.
:D

well i've done it now. since they had me uninstall mcaffee stuff and not all of it uninstalled...and I can't reinstall for some reason and I just sent mcaffee the origianl disk when I bought the upgrade for my stupid rebate...now I can't even install that.
the bigger problem is, OE will not send or receive and whenever I open it up I soon get a win32 application has to shut down thing and then my computer shows its connected but it isnt and I cant get off/on line. have to reboot.
someone suggested I just do fresh install. I have no clue about doing that.
And yes, to answer your question, they had me use their disk, though only for re-installing IE.
suffice to say, my poor computer is not running right and everything seems messed up.

I'm intimidated about a fresh install or reinstall or whatever it is...what do you do about all the updates? I only have sp1 on this computer, do I bother putting that back on?
is there somewhere to find a checklist for how to get everything back to how it was minus the screw ups? I needed to download a new driver for my modem and that is all I"ve done the year and a half I"ve had this computer. I've had TREMENDOUS problems with dial up this year after the computer was in hiatus for 1 yr.
you guys are great for answering things and not making me feel like a peon.

thanks
paula

I did a reinstall of xp and still have the same socket error thing. socket error 10060 error # 0x800CCCOE. When I check this error on google i see plenty of people having this problem...I go to all the different sites (forums and whatnot) and no one ever rectifies this that I have seen. People just insist that we have configured the host wrong and I know I haven't.
Anything else to try?
thanks

This seems more like a host problem, maybe some kind of conflict with the network card or something... but does the rest of the internet work?

Also, did you try install SP2? If yes, did you try without SP2?

i haven't even put sp1 back on yet, so no to sp2 as of yet. the thing is, i was able to use oe fine and this just happened out of the blue.
i have no firewalls rightnow either. I'm trying to keep it simple and clean just to see if oe will work period...hence the reinstall of xp. and yes, i do get online.

Hmm this is really odd. It's probably one of those problems that it's easier to just use a different mail client. :D

I use mozilla thunderbird which is plain but not too plain, there's also foxmail that's not too bad, though it tends to screw up while decoding messages and it will not tell you (the messages will just stay stuck on the server without you knowing)

well thanks for giving this any thought anyhow, i appreciate it.

should I put sp1 back on? I have no real firewall....i'm on dial up....do i have anything to worry about? i'm getting afraid to download things anymore. i hear zone alarm can mess things up. I had mcafee but after my isp had me uninstall it i'm not able to reinstall it because I mailed the first disk in for a rebate after just buying virusscan update with no firewall....long story short, mcafee wont send me firewall since I can't remember the email and can't prove registration from 3 years ago.

Yeah it's dangeraus to go without a firewall, especially with XP. It's safe to turn it off for a bit to test, but in general you should always have a firewall running. The built in one is ok for incoming traffic, but don't trust it to stop outgoing, even if it pops up to ask you and you hit deny.

I use tiny personal firewall, though I tried to install it on an XP machine and it just made XP crash, so I think the only way is to use the built in one, or better yet, get a router.

You might want to try this free online port scan. They also offer a free firewall if you would like to try it.
