Just wondering if any of you are getting lot of DNS issues lately. It seems every now and then I can't resolve any domain names. But not sure if it's at my end or not.

Well they're practically the only Internet in Timmins LOL besides cable.
But hey, it beats dialup. If you run a seperate mail, smtp and dns server to not use sympatico's, then you're all set unless the whole connection goes down.
Actually they usually are pretty good, but I find in the past few months they go down sometimes...
I can't really switch, since well, my mom works for them.

It's not just you. Sympatico has been known for being unreliable sometimes. I mean, I've been getting fed up as well. I have been getting really slow transfer rates (And this time, I can't blame my wireless). I know last year my whole Internet froze for almost 2 days (Like, in december when it was BRUTALLY cold and we had 5 consecutive snowdays (Yet I had to go to co-op, what a drag). But ya, I have seen Sympatico get slow, and just get so slow that you can't do anything online (Which sucks if you're playing a game such as Ultima and are fighting a dragon. You log back in as a ghost
).

I noticed some of the same issues as the rest of you, (Yeah, I'm a Sympatico DSL User in Timmisn as well)... here's an excerpt from the only e-mail I've recieved from them in the past 6 months:
Recieved Sept 17th, 2004
Subject: Increased Internet Speed
Valued Customer:
NorthernTel would like to inform you of a recent service improvement. Now NorthernTel's High Speed Internet service can provide download speeds of up to 5 Megabits Per Second (Mbps). There is no additional charge for this improvement in speed.
For those customers not currently subscribed to NorthernTel's High Speed Internet service, if you order it before October 2, 2004, you get one month free Internet service!
Remember - NorthernTel's Valu-Add Bundles provide great monthly discounts if you subscribe to a package of eligible services.
Isn't that great? I've noticed some speed improvement, but what good is it if I can't access anything? I'm finding that using Firefox versus IE sometimes helps for web browsing (though I believe you're using Mozilla anyway, right Red?).

Yeah I'm using mozilla. Once I get connected I get decent speed, but resolving is SLOW. And I still can't figure out how to setup a caching DNS server that actually writes the records to disk, right no wit stores it in memoy, so after it gets full it has to refetch the DNS info again from the root servers, which are slow given that all the big ISPs and DNs servers (and people like me) access them. I bet they went and put a 5 meg line for the DNS server and they think that will improve internet speed. LOL

Here we go again
If my mom did not work for them I'd switch to cable right now... it's pretty sad that they can't even keep a working DNS server. like common, it's one of those things you set it up and you don't have to do much to it. There's no reason for it to go down so often.

Ya. It's pretty sad how they are down so much. I mean, how are you even supposed to get entertainment? I mean, you pay a good amount for their service and they don't pull through
. I have considered going to cable Internet but it took me 6 months to convince my parents to go to high speed from dial-up (This will probably take me a couple of years or a good sum of cash to back up). Oh well, as long as it can support my internet gaming and my downloads for at least a couple of hours, I'll be happy. But when it goes down, beware

cable yuk!! i had cable and it sux so much .... i donno what kinda deal i had but 2 or 3 days tops of awsome internet then i would hit my limit of bandwith and it would slow to dial up speed for the rest of the month
... 2 days one time and got caped i got pissed watching kAzAa download at 10 kb's a sec n if i had 2 downloads going it would cut in half 5 kb's each but would never go over 10 kb's total (reason i got rid of cable)
BUT if you can afford to get unlimited bandwith then it would rule

Yeah the problem with cable is the cap... I would not be able to handle that. I don't have a way of measuring because of the integer limit in all measuring programs but I use at least a few GB per day, maybe 100GB on a good day. I flooded my drive multiple times with usless data. I go download-happy on kazaa and double click everyone... one of them is bound to work.
Now I'm sick so it better not go down.

. We figured you were skipping
. Haha, anyways, sympatico has been known to GO DOWN when you DON'T want it to. The irony of the ISP.

Yeah. So I did not miss the bus, I just did not take it.
This morning I got up then my eyes and ears just shut down on me it was really weird, and I was all dizzy. So my mom told me to just stay home and I was thinking the same. Now I'm a bit better butmy ears are so blocked it feels like someone shoved baking soda and vinager in there.
So far I can resolve domains so that's a good sign.

I just called tech support. Ended up being ont he line with someone in pakistan and I could not understand him, but he said I had like 92 connections but yet I had no network-related programs open.
No virus... that I know of. Kind of odd really.
But he said there's a limit of 100 connections at once, so if I in fact had all those connections then it's the limit that was stoping me. This explains why P2P sucks so much for me then. That involves lot of connections.

It sucks that they have a 100 connection limit though, I never knew that... so us sympatico users can easly fall victim of evil dos attacks. All it really takes is someone to request any possible open port 100 times in a small time frame. Easy to do. Wether they do something bad to the port or not does not even matter. Just the fact that they have 100 connections.
But this has pushed me to look into getting a better hardware firewall solution, so I can keep track of what goes in and out of the network, since with my cheap linksys router I have no control at all over that.

Right now it's doing it on and off again, but it seems to be the net that goes down and not just DNS this time. Anyone else having problems?

LOL. Why make routers when they die in a year or two? They should really make them sturdier.
