Why we are changing hosts
Posted: Sun Aug 08, 2004 7:19 pm
The forum threads are often interesting to read, here's a super long one. We used to be on that server but I had requested to switch but this one does have issues as well such as rebooting way too often etc...
Kinda confusing to read but did not feel like formatting the whole thing.

I can easly tell the future of this thread. All I have to do is copy and paste it twice, since as you can see it just repeats. "it's down" "I'll fix it" "It's down" "It's been fixed" ... and the beat goes on.

I think the MySql on Beta crashed again because my site has been down for about 2 hours. I tried sending a support ticket, but was getting errors with the database there too.

"There seems to be a problem with the MySQL server, sorry for the inconvenience.
We should be back shortly."
I guess Im experiencing the same Bleep'N problem. Is this something only RCT host can resolve?
Posted by: Red Squirrel Jul 5 2004, 09:48 PM
Well the problem is that the load is too high, since I get "too many connections" so there must be something going on. Accounts being transfered or a dos attack or something..
Posted by: rcthost Jul 5 2004, 10:03 PM
I am very sorry for the delay. The server is rebooting now. I was out for a few hours and so I was unaware of this problem. I have checked with our provider and they plan to add mysql monitoring soon but in the meantime we will set something up to monitor mysql.

Server is back online. I appologize again for the mysql outage. It looks like we need to do some more load balancing.
Posted by: sdebenham Jul 6 2004, 12:58 AM
Might need to look into the server status checking Ryan, as according to cpanel during the mysql outage, mysql (4.0.18-standard) was UP/green... when it wasn't!
Mind you, even the "server load" was a nice friendly green...

Posted by: Red Squirrel Jul 7 2004, 02:01 PM
"too many connections" here too. has the possibility of a Dos attack been looked into? That's what it looks like...
Posted by: Scott Jul 7 2004, 02:03 PM
I got the same thing when i was trying to install a phpnuke site.

This will be fixed shortly. We are looking into if it is a dos or just simply too many connections. We are having our provider look at mysql and make sure it is optimized. Loads are low and traffic is not too extreme so this should not be happening.
Posted by: rcthost Jul 7 2004, 02:17 PM
Fixed! We are now working on making sure this does not happen again.
Posted by: paradoxgraphics Jul 7 2004, 02:19 PM
Thanks Ryan!

phpBB : Critical Error
Could not connect to the database
or could that just be my site?
Everyone else's fixed?
Posted by: Red Squirrel Jul 13 2004, 02:58 PM
What causes this to happen regularly anyway? I have a feeling the server is overloaded and account should be spread on more servers.
Posted by: rcthost Jul 13 2004, 04:29 PM
Other than peak times the server is running fine so we will move a few heavy accounts such as yours to kappa and see how it goes. We are also optimizing mysql.
Posted by: intuitive Jul 17 2004, 10:37 AM
I believe it has crashed again. My site is has been down for about 10 minutes or so
Posted by: billweaver Jul 17 2004, 10:54 AM
I am experiencing a failure with mysql as well. I was unable to report as well.
Is there any status?
Posted by: timodonnell Jul 17 2004, 11:00 AM
I have raised a ticket
Posted by: intuitive Jul 17 2004, 12:18 PM

Posted by: timodonnell Jul 17 2004, 12:35 PM
ta - we love you really
Posted by: rcthost Jul 17 2004, 12:37 PM
This should be solved once the server comes back up, I'm sorry again for the delay.
If anyone with high mysql usage wants to be moved to kappa please submit a ticket. We will do some more balancing this weekend.
Posted by: intuitive Jul 17 2004, 12:41 PM
up now, thanks
Posted by: ryan Jul 19 2004, 06:53 PM
why does the server always need to be restarted in order to fix these problems? Cant the mysql server just be restarted? or exim or whatever service is messing up.
Posted by: rcthost Jul 19 2004, 08:13 PM
mysql restart does not help in these cases, some of the time we can fix without a reboot but if it's taking too long to fix the problem a reboot is really the quickest way to resolve the problem.
Posted by: Red Squirrel Jul 19 2004, 09:18 PM
well I'm just glad to see it wasn't my site causing it.
Posted by: rcthost Jul 19 2004, 09:59 PM
Seems to have been eximstats service spawning too many mysql processes. We have disabled it and so far so good.
Posted by: intuitive Jul 29 2004, 02:25 PM
down again
Posted by: ryan Jul 29 2004, 02:35 PM
911 email sent.
mysql is running, but too many connections. This is getting ridiculous.
Posted by: intuitive Jul 29 2004, 02:40 PM
thanks ryan, yeah, it always seems to go down right when I tell potential sponsors to visit my site, LOL . I hope it's not mine :S ?
Posted by: rcthost Jul 29 2004, 03:02 PM
Working on it now and working on a permanent fix. We thought disabling eximstats fixed the problem but apparently not.
Posted by: ryan Jul 30 2004, 01:15 AM
so is the problem that mysql has too many connections?
How about 2 mysql servers running? Then point half the clients at one instance and the other half at the other?
Posted by: intuitive Aug 8 2004, 02:34 PM
the Mysql went down again, I just sent a 911
