If you are installing SP 3 or 4 (and most likely others) and you get an error that atapi.sys is open and to close all running applications, it is most likely because you have daemon tools on your computer and you have to uninstall it.

I was getting frustrated because 3DS Max 6 requires SP3 and IE6 for some reason so I installed IE6 ok but the SP was giving me problems because of atapi.sys.

I tried to delete the file (it did not let me rename or copy) but it resulted in a BSOD. This is a CD-ROM driver I believe.

This is probably an effort by Microsoft to not allow certain software, it's basically the start of the DMCA madness. but they never realized that I can just reinstall the program after. I hardly use it so it's no big deal, but thought I'd post this in case anyone ever get's that problem.

Although ATA was the only proper name for the standard all along, for marketing reasons, an early version of the standard was called Integrated Drive Electronics (IDE), and the one following it Enhanced IDE (EIDE).

I really don't think this is some kind of ploy by microsoft to keep you from using certain software. atapi.sys, along with a few other files are critical to how cd-rom drives, dvd-rom drives, and burners operate, and being that daemon tools emulates a dvd-rom drive, it's likely the program was using it as well. I could've simply been that daemon tools was still running, or was not completely closed yet when you tired the service pack install. And it wouldn't be uncommon for microsoft to include an atapi update in a service pack for compatibility and stability purposes, and of course windows likes to go splat when you try to overwrite a file that's in use.

Honestly though, I run daemon tools all the time, and I never had to uninstall it when I installed SP4.

Weird... mine was closed but the mounted drive always came back, so there must of been part of it still running.
