I'm planing out a new feature for the cybervillage. It will be a whole new category (igloo picture thingy). The way it would work is that there would be a poll with stocks in it, and you can buy as many as you want from each. The stocks would regularly change value, so if you buy them when they are cheap, you can cash them when they are worth more. The only thing I'm not sure about is what the worth would be based on. I was thinking that the stocks could be based on certain member's post per day rate. So any user can create a new stock type to put in the poll and call it "martha stewart" for example, and set it so it's based on my post per day. So let's say they are set to be worth 10 ICs each, it would divide by my current post per day count and that would be the price. So later on if I posted less in a 24 hour period, that particular type of stock would be worth less, but if I post more, it would be worth more.

I'm just wondering if anyone has more suggestions on how this would work, since what I'm not sure about is:

1) how the stocks would be managed (simply based on each user, people can create their own type?)
2) what the worth would be based on.

So if anyone has suggestions let me know. I'll try to work on this soon.

I guess the trick is to base it on something that's variable, but not easily manipulated, so I would saying basing on something liek a users posts per day wouldn't be the best option, yet I don't have much of a clue what would be better right now ^_^'

Yeah I know what you mean. I would make it so you can't buy stocks in yourself though, but only someone else. What I might even do is have a few type of stocks only and they would be based on global things, like one stock could be based on overall forum activity, the other could be based on some random number etc. Maybe I can make one based on the cybervillage economy somehow. for example, if the bank get's robbed, the stocks go down, if allot of people are buying stuff from the mall, they go up. That would call for some messy programming in all those features though. Maybe I can find a feed on real stocks and base it on actual stocks like MS or something. :D

I'm working on it now, well I'll start soon. :D

I think what I'll do is make it so there's only one type of stock, and it will be based on a global thing. Probably many things combined, and they will be recalculated every day or so to not put too much stress on the server.

I will probably use some kind of formula based on global forum activity, with some random values thrown in.

There will be a big delay with this. My server is being stupid and not keeping me logged in so I can't work on it. I have no clue what's going on, it just drops the cookie for some dumb reason.

Edit: Fixed. I have the interface pretty much figured out. Just need to finish off the display section, the cash in option and think of a better algorthim . Right now I just have a random algorthm that's not too bad but something better will be added most likely.

Completed!

The stock market is completed so I posted a thread in iceteks changes and we can keep the discussion there instead of having two threads:
