ok my friend took win98 off one computer and put on winxp now his modem dont work and he wants to know what is wrong and if i can fix it.

i told him to go look for the updated drivers at drivers.com but not sure if he did.

i told him to send me the information on the hardware but have not got it yet.

so i am just asking what else could stop the modem from working in winxp.

from what i understand he did not get any new mb or hd. just used the old stuff from win98. i told him not to do that but it sounds like that is what he did.

so now i need some more ideas of what messed up his modem.

thanks.

I heard winXP is horrible for compatibility with software, and experienced it as well when I tried it for about 10 minutes on my computer. Had to revert back to win98 because 90% of hardware and software did not work. So it could be the modem is not compatible.

Red's right. When I went to XP, I had to get a modem that was compatible. $80.00 That was more than I paid for the OS! I was on dialup at the time though.

Indeed. Microsoft has coerced many a hardware vender into making sure all their new hardware is XP compatible, but tough luck with any old stuff. However, before you tell him he has to ditch the old modem, do make sure he's checked drivers.com and the manufacturer's website first. Depending on how popular the piece of hardware was, some venders do go out of their way to bring the drivers up to date.

i told him to check drivers dot com for the updates but i dont think he did, and i dont think he is really sure of how to do that. i told him how and still he is wondering what is wrong with the modem.

i think he bought a new modem all info i got out of him today was that the compouter is an hp 4450 ?

i have no idea how old that is.

but he is trying to get his kid to do it as he is trying to work 2 or 3 jobs now his factory layed off a lot of people and is down to one man maint... crew and he is the the maint...

so he is busy there and trying to get more money by second job plus working in his machine shop in his back yard. but his kid is in highschool on the football team and you know how hard it is to get them to do anything that does not have a football or a cheerleader connected to it.

in other words. white male 18 yrs old with brain drain.

no he might not be that bad but it has been four months since he first told me he was having trouble with the modem and i told him to go to drivers . com??? so either the kid did not do it or the drivers did not work.??

will make sure what brand he has and try to get him to check for drivers again.

B)

This might be a starting place. It's hard to help someone who won't help themselves.
