Wow that's cool! Do you get php and mysql too?
You did have to pay for the domain though right? I can't see how they could give that for free, but a domain is actually not that expensive nowadays.

I just checked the site and Im about to sign up, but what happens at the end of 3 years or if I cancel before that? do I get a huge bill or something? Im reading the EULA (?) and I think they want money if you back out in the middle or at the end... Something doesn't seem right, so I'll wait cuz this is too weird of a good deal.

no strings, i read the whole thing, and it's just a loss leader
you can cancel at any time. they don't take a credit card number, so they can't nail you with a big fee.
i may switch to them as my registrar as well, 5.99 a year is better than godaddy.com @ 8.99 a year

phone call huh? I don't like that either. Something sounds really off about that. If it was a cityarea wide thing sure, but we're talking us and canada here. Sure, that'll do alot to weed out warez sites and stuff like that, but they're going to making calls across the continent to give away free webspace, and there's no strings attached? Not bloody likely.

why, you're on the phone less than a minute.
i can make phone calls to the whole continental us and canada for 4 cents a minute. it's a computer making the calls as well.
what they are doing is getting their name out there quick with very little ad money.
and 1and1 is HUGE!!! they are very very large in the EU, they provide isp service to a good portion of the uk. they also provide broadband service to the whole uk
they stand to make gobs of money here.

possibly. Call me cynical but there are a lot of companies, big ones, small ones, trusted brands and no names, that'll do anything to make an extra buck, nomatter who they step on. And one of the many ways they do this is by leaving out critical information, or masking it within legalese and technicalities. I'm not saying there aren't honest companies out there, just that they seem to be in the minority.

Dear jeff dahmer,
Thank you for registering with 1&1 - the leading web hosting company
worldwide.
In this e-mail you will find all the details regarding 1&1 Internet's
4-step automated authentication process.
Please note: If you cannot simultaneously go online and talk on the
phone, then please finish reading this e-mail, complete step one, and
disconnect from the Internet.
This authentication process is intended to provide you with the highest
level of security; it is comprised of four steps described below.
*************
Step 1:
*************
Open the form by clicking on
https://order.1and1.com/xml/auth?contract=3536
and enter a 10-digit phone number where our automated authentication
system will be able to reach you within the next 15 minutes.
Please note: Only one 1&1 Professional Package can be activated per
phone number.
***************
Step 2:
***************
Within the next half hour, you will receive a call from the
automated authentication system that will announce your 4-digit PIN.
Make sure to have a pen and paper available to write down your PIN. You
will need it to set up your free Professional Package.
If you do not catch the PIN the first time, press 1 and the system will
repeat the PIN (touchtone required).
***************
Step 3:
***************
After receiving this call, you may re-establish your Internet connection
(if applicable) and click on:
https://order.1and1.com/xml/auth?contract=35365
again. Please enter your PIN when prompted. This will unlock your
Professional Package and you will soon be able to use the numerous
features the product has to offer.
***************
Step 4:
***************
Please check your mailbox for another e-mail containing the information
to log on to your Professional Package configuration in the
Control Panel.
****************************
Start the authentication process by clicking on this link:
https://order.1and1.com/xml/auth?contract=3536 We hope you will enjoy using your free-for-three-years 1&1 Professional
Package to increase your professional and personal success.

This seems to be just for security purposes, while they are offering the service for free, they probably don't want people to open a bunch of accounts for data dumps and such. It could be possible your number goes on telemarketting lists but I think that would be mentioned in the ToS somehow in legal jargan otherwise they could get in trouble especially if they have a privacy policy that says they won't use the info for other purposes.
But it's the worse thing that can happen I guess, it's not like they can bomb you or anything.

That's sweet! I think I'll go for it. I never know where to put large video/audio files when I want to share them. Now I'll know where. (this host does not allow videos and media-related stuff.

Didn't they give you cpanel with phpmyadmin? I don't think that's something you can just "setup", it's more of a server side thing. I don't think it's run only on php as it has complete access of the databases and users and stuff.

Nah, I looked around their FAQ and they show you how to install PhpMyAdmin with WGET from your shell account they give you. did you order the free hosting red? If not, you want access to mine to look around? They have a really nice setup.

No did not order it, yeah if you don't mind I can have a look around and see. But I'm not sure how I would install phpmyadmin though, I would not know what username/password to put since usernames and passwords are set in cpanel! So if there's no cpanel, can't see where else it would be set. I know there's a way to get to mysql using the command line, but not sure if you'd have access to this. I don't even know how to get access to it on my own server logged into root.
You'd think it would be something easy like "mysql" or "sql" or "sqld" or something but I've tried all those.
