Printer won't work

Can't get the printer to work, some kind of port error. I've done everything from re-installing, getting new drivers, unplugging. Windows shows it's there and ready. It will align the head but will go no further. Properties shows it's on LPT1, which is the printer port. What am I missing?

Hmm wierd.

Can you see the port in device manager? If yes, try to delete it and reboot to see what happends.

If it is there, then I'm not too sure...

try going to the properties of the printer. look for a check box to turn on or off the "bidi" commands and see if that helps. some printers have trouble with that.
B)
if that does not work then did you do a good clean install? as in using the uninstaller for your printer to take it out and then going through the reg. and looking for anything with the name of your printer. (other then zip files of new drivers) and then deleteing those hotkeys.? :o

then you have a reg. with out any knowledge of the printer.. if you did the best cleaning you can and it still dont work. :banghead:

is it a usb capable printer ? if so go and get the usb cord and plug it in that way. that is what i ended up doing with this one i have. :awesome:

Which OS are you using?

If it's Win2000 or XP you have to go to the LPT properties in device manager. Go the Port Settings Tab and "enable Legacy" You may also have to choose to use an IRQ there.

Both 2000 and XP do not use an IRQ for their LPT ports by default. Therefore to use most printers which use an LPT interface you need to adjust the settings I mentioned above or the printer will not find a properly configured port.

uninstall the LPT port, let windows find it again. that should clear up your issue.

Thanks for the help but nothing works. Xp Home, using USB, Legacy enabled, IRQ is listed in properties. Clicked on IRQ and then ok.

The software for printer is for 2000, tried XP drivers from Canon website for S600 printer, still no detection of port. I've uninstalled and reinstalled everything to do with printer. Now the HP Scan Jet 3300C scanner won't work either!

The OS was just reinstalled at the repair shop. Beats me. :pissed off:

I'm not confident enough to start deleting anything from the registry.

:D

your twain has been messed up by the repair shop or it was moved to a different folder, go back to the repair shop and tell them what is going on and when it started, dont get  at them just go in and say in calm voice what happened and let them fix it they should fix it for free but might ask for more money.

if they ask for more money. pick up your computer and walk out because they might be in the business of breaking them to fix them for more money.

doubtful but possible.

any way you might try to uninstall your scanner and your printer if both are shareing the same port. and then install your printer and see if that works ,

if both are on the same port your going to have a hard time keeping them both working it will be either one or the other,

i threw out the scanport scanner i had because of that. now have usb scanner and printer and both work. the sharing of the lpt port by both is and never was any good.

B)

keep at it you will either get it working :biglaugh: , or go crazy  or figure out how to get them both on usb and working B)

I called the tech at the repair store and none of the ports seem to be working. He had me try the front side USB port, still getting the same error. So now I have to lug this 40 pound case back to the store with the printer and scanner.

I will make sure they are not running 9 days behind, before doing so! At least it's still under warranty. ;)

let me guess lexmark or epson printer??
maybe a HP..
you`ll have to go get a cleaner exe to remove all copies of the printer program .
unplug the usb and power off the back on the printer.all the newer printers have a pc card in them and have memory .
so get the cleaner exe before you run it boot to safe mode then remover the printer port ,if you using a usb remove it also then reboot run the cleaner
restart and then install the printer program it will tell you when to plug in theprinter
hope this helps you ;)

Fishy, you may be onto something there. Someone put a software modem on here, not knowing I have DSL. I discovered that from a strange file running in task manager on XP. Windows keeps picking that up as "found new hardware", since I uninstalled it.

Tw, I would try what you suggested if it was not under warranty. I want them to see what was done while it was there. I have a copy of the work ticket and it says 2 modems were tried and the tech thinks I have DSL. A phone call would have saved him a lot of time. The printer is a Canon S600.

Weird, we have a cannon, and we used to always get that problem. But now I just unplugged it since it's ennoying to install it every time I clean install windows. I clean install windows on that machine more often then we use the printer, and there's no more ink and it's like almost 100 bucks for ink so we might as well get a new one, and we are slow. Too slow. Something I want to invest it sooner or later though.

Yep, after a while the ink costs more than the printer is worth. :P I buy generic ink online.

I've never had a problem installing anything using XP. It normally just detects it using the Install Wizard. :)

now that you gave me the laugh for the day ..
one phone call and the modem would of been fixed....
as if they could of configed it for you

and your not the first to have printer problems with XP
i would take a peek in the bios setting .
if the fools tried to put in a modem or two lol
they might of thought it was a bios problem .
yea right sounds like they need to talk about it :P
you will have to remover any thing they tried to install that didn`t work
but i`ll bet they didn`t bother to remover any drivers or program they used to install the modems .
so you`ll have to clean up after them .

Finally got the printer going. Took it to the shop this morning while they were caught up, so it only took a few minutes to find the problem. For some reason the USB drivers were not installed. The tech said he didn't know how it happened.
