I saw Red's Telecom tour thing, and it reminded me of an experience I'm about to embark on.

You see, when Red did that, he was in a Work Placement program through his school (we call it co-op, up north) and he wound up with a local ISP / Telecom company called OnLink. I just started my co-op program and have managed to get in to the local community college's IT Department, and man is it nice. I'll try and post some pictures if I get a chance to take some.

Update:

I've been informed that I will most likely be installing a test server running Windows Server 2003, so I got the Eval version (6-month eval) and I'm hoping to publish an article on setting up a server with Windows Server 2003 Enterprise edition. Stay tuned.

Sweet! That's great!

Once I get a hang of Linux I want to make an article on Installing a RH 8.0 server, as well, so this will be great to have different server setup articles of different OS's/needs.

Here's a shot of the test servers I've worked on (as per previous post)
Contrary to that post, these test serves are running Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server.

haha lol, did not know you still had that. I guess I was not really ready for that picture.

And those are some nice servers they have there! I Wish I could afford one of those. The left rack is a Citrix cluster right? I've been in that room durring the tour at the start of the year.

Haha.

Actually, those servers have moved around since that shot was taken. As for Red wishing he could afford one of those, I'd love to see you fit one of those suckers into your basement. If you remember the size of the rack assembly from when you got the tour, those servers run almost the entire width and lenght of that rack. They are big machines compared to what you used to use as a server (plus they run server operating systems compared to our old web server). And, from the figures I've seen on the newer version of those, they're about $5,000 american for a base model.

Yeah they are quite large and expensive. Though on the serious note all I want as a server is a plain machine with a plain OS and lots of fans (so it can at least sound cool :P)

But in mission critical applications such as a college you need the best of the best. Even our school has a good server, the only problem is that it's not maintained by anyone. :o
