one of the schools you people are in write an article that tells how to do a hard drive swap out of the master c drive with out losing any of the files and being able to change the hard drive letter to the new drive.

i need to move files from drive "C" to drive "D" but i want to back up my drive "D" first then i want to go in to dos and f disk drive d and partion it in to 2 drives ,
and i am wanting to name the partions drive "c" and drive "D" and then go in to windows and reformat that newly partioned hard drive,

then copy the files from drive '''C"" to the new partioned drive "c" and then recopy the files for drive "D" back on the newly partioned drive "D",

and i dont want to keep the orginal hard drive "C".

any way to do this in windows pc,? need to get rid of the slow hd and it is over 5 yrs old now anyway.

and i noticed it is getting hard to boot it wants to fight me. so i figure it is time to get rid of it.

but the seagate scan i have on the boot disk says the hd is fine. but does not say for how long.? :grade11math:

Good idea. I have Drive Image which is made exactly for this, so I'll see if I can setup a "senario" and take snapshots etc and make an article out of it.

It's actually simpler than it seems, drive image will make it easy than fdisk and xcopy would, which could result in dataloss anyway.

B)

ok i know there might be some program to do this but i am on the broke side and was looking for instructions on how to do it with fdisk or xcopy if it can even be done with them. i have the info backed up so there is no loss for me i just need to know how to get the c drive moved to a partion on a hd. when the hd needs to be formated from in windows first and there can only be one c drive. so i have to format it as one then copy the files to that one.

then take the old c drive out and then rename the new partion drive to c drive and the second partion to d drive?

sounds easy but also is a confusing deal to do for non trained personel.

fdisk might work, but you'd still have to format the drive with windows system files because they need to be on a specific physical section if not it won't boot. (command.com, io.sys etc) But I have an idea how that could be done. You'd have to go sys a: c: (assuming you have a windows 98 boot disk) and then do the xcopy from D: to c: where D is the old drive and C is the new. But I'll write an article maybe even tonight that will go more into details. :awesome:
