I think there was a distro right in the beginning that loaded off of 3 floppies and then stayed in memory. There are ones that load off of a cd as well, so look around if you want.

Yeah, even HDD ones would be fine, as long as they don't take up more then 100 megs, and don't need too much memory, I'll have a look around. :)

why don't you give VMware a shot?

Red, memory? Linux can run off memory, but that is only the kernel and console.

memory is my main problem, I can't put more than 32 megs on these old 486s. I once put 64, but I don't know how I did it, since if I put both 32 chips in that same board, it does not work. simm ram can be weird sometimes, one day it works, the other it does not.

Yeah, but if I want to setup a server, I can't really make use of it. :P

I'll probably start with something simple like a DNS server or something. But man, can't wait to have enough cash to get a decent PC. All I need is about 500 bucks for a case, mobo, cpu and some ram, hdd and floppy drive, might as well throw in a cheapo cd-rom drive in there as well. Or I can get a dvd and switch it with my current computer (who want's to watch dvd's on a server? lol)

I want to install red hat on my main computer though, just to make sure it works properly, as I had trouble on the 486, it would error out durring the installation and throw a bunch of code at me, hopefully it was not a problem with the disc.

I should install it on my parant's computer. Is there a win98 skin? They wont notice.

Thanks for posting, Wldkos. They have so many different distros specialised in so many different things. It's neat. B)

Yep, and I'll install red hat on my main PC soon just so I can play around with it. Can't really do much server stuff unless I start running down stairs and back up all the time to test things, but I'll simply try to learn how to configure stuff and all that. I wanted to install it like an hour ago, but I ended up doing other things. :P

Arg, I won't be installing Red Hat. If forgot, my C drive only has 2 gigs left and I pass the 1024 cylinder limit thingy, so I don't have room for another partition, unless I want to have like a few megs left on my C, which I don't want to do!

Oh well, I'll do it the right way, wait till I can afford hardware to build a server.

Im sure you can clean some stuff up and make a decent 4 gig partition. that is what I did, and it worked great. A minimal install of Red Hat, will go for aouut 1-1/2 gigs. You can also go into the package selection toold and take what you want/need and therefore save more space.

Yeah I'll see what I can do, I want at least 1.5 gigs free, but maybe I can manage. I'd try to pass the 1024 limit, but I'll be screwed if it does not boot, and since this is ntfs, it's not like I'd be able to retrieve anything in dos. I can always get a different distro but I want to learn red hat more.

red, just because "red hat" kinda sounds like your name, doesn't mean that you have to use it ;). From what I have heard and seen so far, all linux distros are the same. They just have different interfaces (KDE, GNOME, ICEVM (?)) and ways of using file system structure.

When you install an RPM on RH, the docs might want to go into /usr/share/docs, but if you took the same rpm and tried to install it on a Debian system or Mandrake, there might not be an /usr/share/docs but a /usr/docs or /usr/shar/local/docs.

Its all small things. Get yourself a linux on a floppy cd, learn the console and from there you will be comfortable on any distro you want.

Red, I wouldn't worry about crossing the 1024 cylinder boundary. I've done it, in fact, my system runs fine like that. I have Windows ME running on my main partition, and the other partition which is past the 1024 cylinder boundary is my Windows XP partition and it boots and works just fine. Besides, you could always undo the changes, just make sure you have a spare copy of your Partition Magic rescue discs.

Might try it, but it's sort of a gamble situation as if the boot files are past the limit on the partition, this is where the problem lies, but if the boot files are within the limit, then I'm fine. But if I do a defrag I should be ok though... I've been trying a distro on a 486 but I cant get these old isa network cards to work.

Oh, and that pentium board you gave me, it does not work. I turn it on, and nothing happends. Tried various sticks of ram, removed and put back the cpu etc... if it was not for that I could get it to work as PCI cards usually auto detect No IRQ /IO headaches and all that.

No it's just because I have red hat, so I just need to install it, no need to download and use up another bunch of discs. But I did not know all distros where pretty much the same, that's good to know. I figured the command for red hat would be different than mandrake etc... So with this freesco floppy I have I can even play around with it on my computer as it just boots off the disk. As long as I don't do any "disk management".

wrong. of course it depends on which operating systems you're going to install and where on the hard drive you install them. try installing a windows 9x/ME or solaris past the cylinder boundary. it won't work.
win nt/xp/2k and linux do not have a cylinder limitation but win 9x/ME do. ;)

Oh ok, so I won't have a problem if I put linux after it though. But do I still need to have at least part of the partition within the limit?

no, the linux partition does not have to be anywhere near within the 1024 cylinder limit.

<img src='http://www.jandjgraphics.com/Misc/pm.jpg' border='0' alt='IceTeks forums posted image by megaspaz'>

the linux partition in the screenshot is the purple box. it's nowhere close to being in the 1024 cylinder limit. shoot it's in it's in its own zip code. :D

but that's where i installed rh 7.3 ;)

Cool. Wow you got quite a lot of partitions. :D

I only have two. C and D, D is for all my stuff, C is for my OS/ programs. That way if I have to reformat, I don't have to worry about loosing much, I just need to backup my bookmarks, important emails and that's about it. Oh, and my solitaire high scores J/K
