1.4 To Be Last Mozilla Suite?

I read this little tidbit on slashdot, and the roadmap seems to confirm it. A little tidbit I seem to have missed apprently. But after 1.4 mozilla will stop being a suite application, and break off into it's seperate components (ie seperate broswer, mail client, composer). A very non-microsoftian move if I do say so myself

And in related news, the Mozilla 1.4 RC2 is out, so bleeding-edge mozillians, head on over to mozilla.org to download.

Yep, it's true.

I like Mozilla as it is right now, but maybe it will be even better!

I am sort of scared....

Yep. I saw that this morning. I am not going to download it yet though. I am just going to wait until 1.4 becomes final. They are trying to make it really stable and dependable since it will be the last of its kind. I might stick with 1.4 for a long time if I don't like the changes in 1.5...

I can't wait to try 1.5.... It will be sort of neat...

I don't want to try these early builds though.

I'm the same way, don't like to use beta software for something I use often - wait till it's released and ready for productivity use.

well I was tak, when I was using windows, but now I am back on linux and I havent hear the greatest things about Opera on linux. Konqueror is nice, but get's annoying and lacks a little. I have yet to try Galeon. But for now, I think I might switch between mozilla and konq.

Why don't you try Firebird? It's okay, but I think it lacks some of Mozilla's "Completeness".

well I went ahead and snagged RC2, but then again I was running the alpha anyway, so it's an upgrade

. I just installed it like 2 sec ago, so I can't really make any impressions on it yet, but as far as stability concerns, I rarely ran into any kind of problems with the alpha, and when I mean rarely I mean still a lot less than with IE and a couple service packs

Actually, it took me a while to like opera more than IE (we have to admit, Opera is better than IE

) but I got ajusted, it's just a big change. From Opera to Mozilla was not that big of a leap as they are almost the same, but Mozilla renders things better.

what I hated about IE was the fact that this always happend out of the blue and the fact that it does not load stuff as it downloads, but wait till it's done, with tables. I remember the photo gallery would take several minutes before it would show up, all in one shot.

But that click sound adds alot. I kind of felt weird not to hear it after I switched.

Be sure to report back with what you think of it.

I have started using the .zip builds.... When I upgrade, I just delete that whole Mozilla folder I unzipped and replace it with the new one, right? Of course, I would keep the plugins folder and then put the plugins back in......

I hated that sound!

That annoyed me so much.

My move to Mozilla from IE was sort of hard... I am glad I switched though because I love Mozilla so much!

I ment, as for the look and function, but as for stability... Opera always crashed on me, more than IE, so it was still a bigger leap in that departement.

That scared me!

Opera crashed a lot on me too....

When I was using 1.4b, Mozilla would crash whenever I did a drag and drop with text, but that was a beta so I sort of expected problems. It doesn't crash 1.3.1 though.

I don't see what's so good about Opera. I mean, it doesn't render a lot of things correctly, it crashes a lot, its mail software sucks, tabbed browsing doesn't work well (For me anyway), it's not really faster, and worst of all..... IT HAS ADS!

Yeah, the ads really bugged me, they caused animation to go all slow and stuff. I never had a problem with tabbed browsing though, and it's not the "fastest browser on earth", I find mozilla to be the fastest I've tried. Linux ones are probably faster but that's also affected by Linux's good IP sockets.

Speaking of Linux, I'll have to figure out how to get that old Pentium to boot so I can play around with a router distro, but it seems the motherboard is fried.

Opera's tabbed browsing was a problem for me because I couldn't click on my mouse wheel to open a link in a tab. That was so ANNOYING! I would have to do some crazy mouse gesture to open something in the background, and I hated it.

Mozilla's tabbed browsing is easier in my opinion.

I love tabbed browsing, and I don't think I could live without it now.

opera for windows for me is indeed the fastest browser. jacked up the max connections and max servers to 32 and 20 and boom! loaded pages pretty much instantly. opera for linux on the other hand turned out to a be a waste. konqueror for me turned out to be the best browser for everyday use. mozilla's a fine browser though. i just don't use it that much.

Have you done that with Mozilla?

You can... If you are using 1.3 or above (I think, but it may be earlier), you can type "about:config" into the address bar and edit your hidden preferences to change that network type stuff.

Enable pipelining too....

Then, Mozilla will probably be just as fast as Opera.

I found Mozilla to already be faster than Opera without doing those tweaks.

nope haven't tried that. but even if i did, i'd still use opera instead of moz. opera for me is just better to look at.

if there wasn't opera, tak, i'd be using mozilla.

besides, mozilla still doesn't do favicons right. mozilla only shows them if you use the link tab which isn't how m$ implemented favicons and how opera or netscape displays them also. though m$'s implementation for their own invention of the favicon is still the worst implementation, a browser is supposed to find the favicon automatically in the root directory.

that's cool. i actually like favicons. don't ask me why, but i think they're kinda neat.
