There is a 30 minute planned power interruption on Feb 21 at 7:30am and the server will be running on battery power during this time. No downtime is expected as I have 4 hours of battery reserve for my server room. I will be home during this time since I work night shifts so if the outage is extended I will be able to shut down stuff properly.

This is just a FYI, in case there are any issues, but there should be zero impact.

No kidding, but that's Red for ya. :)
Your normal UO server operator would have said nothing, had the shard go down and *maybe* given an explanation when it finally came back up 14 hours later.

Pretty much... I like to give out notices even if service is just threatened. Guess it comes naturally, working in telecom. :P Communication is key. Nothing worse than a service that's down and you don't know why or when it will be back up.

The power outage never happened, it looks like it will be on the 15th.

I think it's going to be tomorrow. :P I'll be at work if/when it happens but I'll get the alarm if my house goes dark. Not that it matters either way, shard should not be affected in any way.

I am due to do battery maintenance though, but will be fine either way.

What do you do on night shift? And are you charging adequately to compensate for working outside normal office hours? Working night shift has a negative impact on health, social life and general well being. You be taking this into account.
Don't get bogged down in the world of set hourly rates. your worth more mr squirrel

My job is pretty laid back, I work at a NOC so I monitor network stuff. DMS100, fibre optic, cellular, building environmental etc... and take the occasional after hours trouble call. There is tons of stuff to know and tons that we do, but overall nights tend to be fairly quiet. Can get hit with very busy shifts though if something happens. Or sometimes it's just lot of calls for random stuff and just happens to all come at once. As long as I'm watching my alarms I can do other stuff too to keep busy so it's quite nice.

The nice thing of shifts is I get lot of days off, and the night shifts are nice since I don't have to get up early. Getting up early is a real killer. When I work day shifts I'm just overall more tired all the time. I do prefer working 12's instead of 8s. With 12 you get more hours in few days so you get more days off. Whether I work a 12 or an 8, it still takes up my day either way, so may as well work 12s.

Overall I've been pretty blessed with this job, there is nothing in this city that compares really. I would probably be screwed if they decided to close the department and move the functions somewhere else. That's why I've been wanting to find a side project to try to make more money on the side, just as a backup. Been lazy though. :P
