Public chat had to be temporarily disabled as it used a pre-coded chat package known as Knives. This package made use of the old save system which no longer exists so in moving forward, this had to be left behind.

What we will be doing in the future is creating a simplistic public chat system that players can make use of sooner rather than later. It has been planned already, we just need time to code it. As time goes on, we will look into ways of expanding the system.

For now, you can use guild chat, party chat and alliance chat in game or use other chat programs to communicate with each other.

Why would that have anything to do with the save system? That's weird.
But most things in run uo seem to be coded screwy. :/

Will mail system be back? Is that something seperate?
I think in order of usefulness/importance:
1 Seeing who is online
2 Mail/IM system
3 public chat like the old [c

I think if people would use the forums more it would help a little with messaging and stuff, but its still hard to set up any sort of meeting/trade with non-guildies when you get on UO and can't see who is on or give a shout out. :(

One of those don't know how much you need something til its gone sort of things.

What happens is the save system consisted of different "stores". Basically, Item, Mobile, Guilds and Accounts. All 4 had to be handled slightly differently by the new save system and basically coded separately. Items and Mobiles are very similar mind you.

The issue with the knive's system is that rather than using a controller item or something (which would fall under the Item store) they actually had their own store. It just did not seem to make sense to code an extra store just for that. What I will do is either see if I can make Knive's use a controller Item to store all the data, or just recode a simplistic system instead.

Worse case scenario I may just make the extra store, not a HUGE deal, but there's a few hard coded values in some places I'd have to change. TBH I wanted to look at it at one point and kinda forgot about it till we got in very late beta, when it was too late to start messing around again.
