I have pm'd some of the staff and gotten no response (which is very concerning) wondering if AOV is going to be fixed or if it's just dead.

It's being worked on but we've run into a roadblock and are currently trying to figure out where to go from there. Red will update the players when the devs have figured out a solution.

Nothing stops people from playing now, other then being behind in content. Just be sure to backup your client if you patch to play other shards or TC1.
Just think of the shard as pre aos with tons of post aos content.
As far as when new updates will go in, I can't tell for sure, but I will be getting back on the grind some time after Christmas. There is lot of issues linked to the SQL functionality that must be fixed before we move forward, though in the meantime nothing stops us from coding new content as the major system file changes should be done. We just can't release anything until it's 99% stable.
I've also been busy IRL and such too, I have a project I'm working on that may possibly bring me more cash which in the end could partially go towards the server infrastructure.
Speaking of servers I'm on my 7th ish hour of overtime restoring a corrupt VM at the hospital. Fun fun... Silly windows and it's random systematic decisions to randomly crap out.

You'd definitely have an upper hand on those just starting out so it's worth keeping all the stuff you've obtained. OSI introduced some really good recycling programs that I think a vet will benefit from the most. I anticipate most will be cleaning out their houses of stuff they've stockpiled but never used.
In addition to that, you'll start seeing new items that weren't attainable before such as zoo and museum items (particularly glasses and skill talismans). Vets should have no problem obtaining these as soon as they are introduced as they have already accumulated a great deal of wealth and/or resources.
AOV is also thinking about introducing a system such as the 'spring cleanup' system where you can get rid of items. This will allow veterans to get rid of some of the items they don't use or can't sell but which have some kind of value in terms of rarity (such as some decorative event items). Players will receive points towards their name for turning in items which can be used to trade in for special items. Higher rarity items will be worth the most points.
Much of what you've already obtained is OSI accurate (Doom artifacts, ML artifacts) which will remain untouched provided it is accurate (If it isn't, it will be scaled if possible). Anything custom will be compared to what OSI provides and will either be left alone, swapped, scaled, reimbursed or (at the very worst, last resort) removed.

Although that would be fun, not everyone would like to play that way. We have to think of all play styles (pker, pvmer, crafter, vendor). That being said, AOV has many ideas to increase pvp, both casually and with high stakes such as loot and items from those you kill/best in battle.

PVPers will likely enjoy the pre-aos fighting system we have planned and partially implemented (briefly talked about in various other threads). To put it short, you have the choice of invoking a system where every facet is free pvp for you and any other player who chooses to join in. You essentially have the power of making the game more challenging or more entertaining for yourself. There's tons of ideas floating around and we'll likely meet with the pvpers to see what ideas they can brew up.

If it works on OSI, then it will work on AOV. Right now it should work fine but keep in mind that not everything is implemented (For example, I don't believe we have the tactics special shot requirement yet, but we will in the future when each skill is revised). Your best bet is to experiment with different templates and styles. It also depends on if you're using your character for pvp or pvm.

our pvp system is abit different. If you do come across someone out hunting id have a backup plan. I could maybe try to catch you online and let you test your template vs greenbacks or mal. both are pvm templates but they can hold their own in a pvp as well.
